[SOLVED] Firewall and VOIP

Hi I am running a simple firewall on my laptop configured using ufw.
Now I was trying to set up my new SIP account in linphone. It works just fine except when I receive calls - I get no audio in. This is what I know so far:
1. Not a NAT problem, works fine via my phone setup on the same LAN.
2. No new new entries in /var/log/iptables.log - I opened port 5060 for udp and 7078 for udp and tcp. (linphone wants rtp on 7078 I believe)
3. It starts working fine, if I open all ports via, "ufw default allow".
How do I find which port it is that I need to open for this work?
Help is appreciated. Thanks.

Add an explicit LOG rule at the start of INPUT to just log all incoming traffic, then examine those logs:
iptables -I INPUT -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-prefix='[NEW]'
iptables -I INPUT -m state --state RELATED -j LOG --log-prefix='[RELATED]'
While a call is in progress (with the firewall disabled), you could also examine the output of netstat:
netstat -tunp | grep program
Replace "program" above with whatever application you're using so you only see the connections that process has open.

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks

  • How to set up VLAN for DATA and VOIP on SRW248G4P switch?

    Hi guys,
I am totally new and was given this task to complete. I  really really need help.
We are using one network 192.168.1.0
    Shared  with data and voip.
    CISCO C870, 5 switches LINKSYS SRW248G4P .
    The  email wrote:-
    On the Linksys switch;
    - create two  different VLANs one for voice and one for data.
    - put a firewall  between the two VLANs (between voice and data) and only enable certain  ports to flow to voice network (inbound tcp 8443 and ssh )
What  should i do guys? I really need a dumb guide now.
I know its simple for  you guys but i am not a smart IT fella. Whats the  step by step?

If the switch is new or you have support on this, then you might try calling the support center.  Here is a link:
    https://www.myciscocommunity.com/community/smallbizsupport
On the right hand side you can find links to the support center.
Here is a link to the guide:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9967/prod_maintenance_guides_list.html
@ the bottom of this link you can find your switch model, you want the larger of the two.  In this guide it shows you how to create a second vlan.
Will your router be the firewall between the two?
    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Lissitz

Hi Jen.  My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse.  Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too.  Now to the problem at hand.  I have the same problem.  I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade.  Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade.  But I'm sure other factors are involved.  Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem:  What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it.  Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade.  Hope this works.   Charlie

  • No firewall and still no iChat

I've been without iChat since I upgraded to 10.4.3. I've read many posts on how to fix the problem and virtually every post discusses ports behind firewalls. Now being an impatient person, I decided to turn off the Firewall and see if I could then get iChat to work. The result - I still can't get iChat to work! So my question is - can anyone tell me the simplest way to get iChat to work WITHOUT THE FIREWALL? I can get that far then perhaps I can sort out getting it to work behind the firewall. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hello Frank.
Please clarify: ... since I upgraded to 10.4.3.versus your posted system info that shows Mac OS X (10.2.x). Do you mean text chat only with Jaguar's non-AV iChat? Also, is your problem with several chat buddies or only with one? With both of your listed Macs or only one?
If you have really upgraded to Tiger, my best suggestions are in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
However, if you are just attempting to deal with port configuration in a router or wireless setup, I suggest you take ALL your wireless equipment, routers, firewalls, and any other internet connected devices like VOIP or game boxes out of the loop and connect your Mac directly to your modem (or other Mac for Rendezvous or Bonjour messaging) via Ethernet cable. Run directly wired until you get your iChat AV connection working.
If your modem connects via telephone cable or USB, that may well be your problem. Be sure you have adequate broadband service. Then, if you are using a USB modem, get a modem that connects via Ethernet and try again.
Once you get iChat AV working reliably, you can reconnect your necessary additional equipment, one item at a time, to see whether the problem returns. If adding one item back makes the problem reappear, remove the item again and reinstall it again to be SURE that this specific problem/fix is repeatable. Then you will KNOW that individual component is at least one of your problems. Leaving the newly tested item disconnected for the remainder of the test, repeat this process for EACH additional removed component, ALWAYS one item at a time. When finished, you will know every component that is a problem.
When you have identified EVERY problem item in the communications loop, you can apply the info from your equipment's documentation or customer support sites or the above links to fix the problem.
If you have a laptop, it is particularly simple to try to connect from another ISP locations (internet cafes, university, work, libraries, hotels, or other places that offer internet access). That will let you know whether your problem is related to your ISP service or connection.

  • McAfee Firewall and scanning

I have a B520 Idea centre with the following installed:-
BT Net Plus (McAfee) installed through my BT Internet package
Windows 8 upgrade (which updated the Windows 7 which was originally installed)
Last week a message appeared telling me that the McAfee Firewall and Anti Virus were turned off.
When I went to them I could not turn them on. I deleted and then re-installed BT Net plus but it did not fix the problem.
I then thought I would do a system restore to an earlier date but at the end of this I got the following error message:-
System restore failed while deleting the following
    Path C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\b95df1c913bec87a.sys
    an unexpected error ocurred 0x8007007b
I also seem to have lost the option to restore the complete system to the default option.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could fix this and also, is there any way I can now restore the complete system back to its original state with Windows 7
    Thanks for any help

    hi FJAYM,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If you have a wired Keyboard, Shut the computer down and turn it back on then right away start tapping F2
this should boot you up to a recovery menu where you can select recovery and and will let you Restore it to factory Settings. Windows 7 might be reloaded to the system.
If this does not work, you might need to contact Technical Support in your location and ask how to obtain the REcovery CDs

  • Arno-iptables-firewall and CUPS

    Hello everyone.
I'm having a problem with my firewall and CUPS. The thing is, when I try to print when the firewall is active the programs (kword, kcontrol, etc) can't contact cups daemon. But when the firewall is stopped I can print normally. The problem is obviously something with the firewall configuration.
So, the question is, does anyone know how should I configure the firewall (Arno's iptables firewall) in order to solve this problem?. I thought about opening the cups port (631) but this wouldn't be the best solution. I don't want to open a port that shouldn't be open.
The weird thing is that I can access cups thru localhost:631 using konqueror but incredibly slowly. I don't know why the firewall is blocking cups.
I almost forget. Before you ask the printer is connected direcly to my computer. Is not a network printer. I have the needed module loaded (usblp) and the cups server is running.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gonza

    Hello.
I tried the command iptables -F but nothing. The cups server is still unreacheable by kcontrol.

I get a message that my network connection has timed out while trying to update my iPhone on iTunes. Has anyone else had that problem and if so what solutions have you found? I was told to turn off my firewall and/or virus protection while updating but am nervous about doing that for obvious reasons. I'm also disgusted with Apple not providing free tech support.

See this article about the ports that have to be open during the update process. iTunes has to contact Apple during the download. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues

I can't get the IOS 5 to work for windows Vista.  I'm running kaspersky pure 2.0, windows firewall and windows defender.  I have turned them all off, I then attach my Ipod 4th gen and I get the "cannot connect to itunes update server".  I ran diagnostics in itunes and it tells me I dont have a internet connection.  I'm on the internet right now, and I DO have a internet connection, but it tells me Itunes says otherwise.  I'm able to send this message on the same pc with internet connection but keep running into this error.  I have now read discussiong boards through apple and disabled all my firewalls, still no luck.  I was able to update the lates version of itunes, and just waiting to get my ipod updated now, please help me.

On the computer you should be able to go to the network properites. Go to the TCP part and unchec the line that says obtaind DNS automatically and check the one that says use the following. Add the 8.8.8.8 and Google other 8.8.4.4.

I disabled firewall and antiviurs, didnt work. Ive called tech support, as soon as the person hung up thinking that it was working, it stopped working. I REALLY LOVE MUSIC and want songs on my new ipod. Please someone help....

First try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software using the following or the link within it that applies to XP.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Then try the other items in:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

You might want to try resetting your router and your modem - just unplug the cords, leave them unplugged for about 3-5 minutes and then replug the modem and then the router in that order.
This may or may not correct your problem - call back if it doesn't.

  • X5800 how to use SIP and VOIP

Hello, I have a X5800 music, model 5800d-1 and I can enter all the necessary SIP data. I get the message (settings, connectivity, admin settings, sip settings) registered which is fine. My provider is freephonie. Question: 1) Although on the freebox the SIP is activated, I don't receive incoming call on my nokia. 2) How do I tell my nokia to call on the internet ? Is it possible only using SIP tel numbers which I can enter in the contacts list? Help much appreciated. Pierre.

SIP and VoIP are not synonymous. VoIP can indeed use SIP (and often does), but other services, such as video sharing for example, also use SIP.
It so happens that the 5800 has no native support for VoIP, which is why you can't make SIP calls using it.
Your only solution for SIP is to use third-party services such as fring, for example. Once logged into your fring account you can subscribe to a SIP service. Fring's systems will register to the SIP account and relay the comminucation through your fring account. There's lag and the audio quality isn't as good as a direct SIP connection but at least it works.
The alternative is to use a phone that supports VoIP/SIP natively.
