Starting New Topics

The whole point of this forum is sharing issues and receiving help. So why don't I have a "post new discussion" button on any of the support forums? That leaves me only the option of hijacking an existing thread trying to get help. The online support service doesn't work and Apple doesn't allow ordinary customers to contact them after a few months (when most problems will happen).
Is the lack of a posting button inherent in all users or have I somehow incurred the wrath of Steve Jobs :)?

Hi Clumpy!
If you have a question, or suggestion, about using Discussions, from this page Feedback about Discussions, click on Post New Topic.
If you have a Technical question about Apple Hardware, Programs, Services, Technology, Software, Applications, Products, etc, from this page Discussions - Forum Home, select an appropriate Category from one of the sixteen divisions.
For example, under Mac OS X Related Software, choose the Category Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.
On the page that opens, select a Forum, such as Installation & Setup, or Using Mac OS X Tiger.
Most Category pages, have numerous Forums within them.
But some may have only one, two, or three.
For example the Safari Category page has four choices listed under Forum / Category, but only two of them, are Forums:
Safari For Windows
Safari for Mac Support forum.
And the Apple Remote Desktop Category, has only one Apple Remote Desktop Forum.
On Forum pages, there is an option to Post New Topic.
Click here for all iPod Forums.
Click here for all iTunes Forums.
Click here for all iPhone Forums.
More info here How Is Discussions Content Organized.
It can be confusing, but explore the different areas, and you will acquire a better understanding of the hierarchy.

  • OLD: Started new Topic: See: New P6N 650i and Overclocking

Hi Forum.. Just built a new box with following components:
    Intel C2D-E6400
    MSI P6N 650i SLI-FI mobo
    Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2-800 (2.2v) memory/2gig
    Rosewill RCX-Z775-SL 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS HDD

COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power 650W Power Supply
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UB Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Installed WinXP Pro with sp2 and system is up and running (without a hiccup) quite nicely... PCAlert4 shows: CPU=20c, Sysytem=25c, CPU Fan=2170...  CoreTemp shows: Core#0=32c, Core#1=31c.... My guess is that these numbers are good.
I have built quite a few builds over the last 15 years but mostly on the AMD platform and have "never" attempted to overclock... I was thinking of trying it with this new build as it seems, from this forum, I have all the right components... I would like to try a modest O/C maybe up to 3ghz... I went to the bios and the Cell menu and tried to make some changes  but some items will not allow you to change their values and to be quite honest, I'm not sure "what" values need to be changed and "where", to attain an O/C of 3ghz... I appoligize for my ignorance in overclocking but I really do not want to screw up this system... I was hoping that one of you nice gents out their with the same basic components could point me in the right direction...  "Thanks in advance",   JD <aka: Peckrhead>

    mis dos centavos,
I am another pleased owner of this fine board. Proud to say it!
Great layout, install was a breeze (though MSI is in serious need of a native English speaking tech writer), basic setup went alright,
though I still have issues (probably due to the crappy utilities); but performance and ease of OCing is great.
    Anyhoo, I've been working on/with this cheat-sheet
    Here's a short version-
*Update BIOS to the latest version or not; there are differing opinions on the need to, you have to do
            the cost/benefit|risk analysis.
    Part 2. In BIOS Setup
[ ]   (1) On first boot enter BIOS Setup and select - 'Load Optimized Defaults'
** If you've never seen or figured out how to enter BIOS Setup, you probably need to learn more before
thinking about overclocking. Think about it.
            (2) Save and exit.
ON REBOOT ENTER BIOS Setup again AND SET THE FOLLOWING:
    [ ] A. >>Advanced BIOS Feature
       [ ]   (1) >CPU Feature   **Press <F4> FOR 'C1E' FIELD*

            ie. , 1064 / 4 = 266.6 x 8 = 2128MHz core 'speed' (E6400 spec).
               *(b) is DDR speed or frequency. Since 533 / 2 = 266.65 MHz; result
should be 1:1 FSB|DRAM ratio. if 'System Clock Mode' is [MANUAL],
                 (b) can be any speed supported by RAM and FSB|DRAM ratio may vary.

As you increase the FSB, the RAM will follow in the pattern of 1:1
    shown in BIOS.
When 1FSB:1RAM is overclocked above the rated frequency of your RAM
use the following values: Timing: 5-5-5-15; vDIMM: 2.#V, max per DIMM.
    e.g. DDR2-667 4-4-4-12 1.9V operating at ~400Mhz will need to be set
    to 5-5-5-15, 2.1 - 2.2V.
    5. Save settings and reboot.

Sorry about the formatting, I typed this in Notepad, Lucida Console (monospace), and pasted it in to the editor. Something I don't know evidently. Hope you find this handy regardless. If you see an error let me know, I haven't made a mistake so far this year, so I know I'm due.
One of you mods can delete the whole thing if you like. I don't mean to step on any toes or threads!

  • Starting new topic, can't play previews

Thanks to everyone I have buttons up the wazoo now. Problem is I cannot get the clip to play when I preview. Even the simplest basic menu.
    1) Create Menu
    2) Import timeline
    3) Drag normal video button, non-animated
    4) Link button to timeline
    5) Preview from here
    6) Menu opens with button(s)
    7) Click any button
    8) First frame of clip displays, sits there for a few seconds
    9) Preview screen goes black, all controls on preview panel grey out
Is there something obvious (except to me) that I am NOT doing???
Thanks again for all the previous help!
    Glenn

    Glenn,
Obviously your boolean skills are better than mine, as I was drawing blanks on all of my searches.
OK, lets break your Asset apart and see if we can eliminate any Audio problems. Back in your NLE, Export your Video (only) as a DV-AVI (remember, uncheck Audio, as we want
    b ONLY
Video). We want nothing but an elemental Video stream. You also do not need to Export the full NLE Timeline for this test. If you're using Premiere, you can move the WAB (Work Area Bar) to the head of your Timeline and drag its right point to, say 3 mins. That should give us enough to work with.
Import that as a Timeline into Encore2 and link your Button to that Timeline. Does this Preview correctly?
Note: I'd do a Save_As of your Project to work on, just in case something goes wrong. You do not need to delete your existing Timeline. Just let it go to the "Orphanage" for now. If this works, you can then clean out this "test" Timeline and we can work with the Audio aspect. If this doesn't work any better, we'll see what can be causing the problem with the Video.
If you have a link to the previous post with a similar problem, please add that, as I'd like to refresh my memory of what was suggested and tried.
    Thanks,
    Hunt
PS please refresh my memory a bit. Back in your NLE, what are the sources of the Clips that you are editing? What are their specs/CODEC's, etc. You can use G-Spot (www.headbands.com/gspot) to gather all of that data. This info might not be needed, but if your Video-only does not Preview, it might help us track down the problem. Also, your system's specs, especially your video card and I/O setup might yield some useful info - just in case.

  • TOC entry without new topic

I have a multi-chapter project in FrameMaker 12 that I've linked in RH11. I use RH to auto-generate the TOC. The first page of each topic has the first two headings from each FM chapter, with the remaining headings starting each remaining topic. I've done this by creating and mapping two paragraph styles in FM. H0, H1, and H1A. I use FM to auto number them like this:
    100 H0 Chapter title
    101 H1A Topic 1
    102 H1 Topic 2
    103 H1 Topic 3
In RH Project Settings / FM conversion settings, I set H1 to start a new topic, which creates a corresponding TOC entry. I've set H1A to not start a new topic because my client wants it on the same page as the first topic. However this of course doesn't create a TOC entry. This makes it look like the H1A entry is missing from the document.
Is there a way to have RH include a FM paragraph in the TOC, but exclude it from creating a new topic?

I already had the TOC in FM, along with the index and glossary. I'm transitioning my client to publish online, but they want to keep the PDF publish option. When I brought the FM content to RH and started styling the Responsive HTML5, I wanted to keep the first two H1 sections on the first page of each topic and have the remaining FM heading start new topics. So I created the H1A format in FM and used that for the 2nd heading in FM. Then in the RH conversion settings I set H1 to start a new topic, but not H1A. But the H1A was excluded from the imported and published TOC. I mistakenly assumed that was because I didn't have it set to a new topic also. Once I read the responses here I backed up and realized that it was actually because I didn't add H1A to the FM TOC after I created that para format in FM. Stupid mistake.

The "Roman" font is not being recognized in Firefox 4.0. As such, I cannot read any previously posted topics or post any new topics on websites using this font.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Errors on creating new Topic in RH9 (9.02 Patch)

Have found that when creating a new topic in RH9 project that on building the project errors 3018 and 3111 are being presented.
Appears that the error is being caused by the placement of the Page Break in the word document at the commencement of the topic.  Prior versions of RH would insert a new topic as such :-  (Note correct placement of Page Break and 'Keep with next' paragraph mark).
When adding a new topic now it appears as such :-
Note the placement of the 'Keep with next' paragrah mark is now at the start of the topic line rather than at the start of the page break.
On building then project with a topic in this format causes 2 additional error messages to be presented in error wizard :-
    1.  HC3018: Warning: In the project file, an #include statement is specified without a filename,  and
    2.  HC3111: Warning: This topic contains keywords but no title
The second warning (HC3111) is returned despite the topic properties containing a title, and keyword sections correctly filled out.
I have found that the work around to fix this is to correct error HC3018 first by :-
Place Cursor at start of the topic line immediately prior to the # symbol.
Back space to remove the 'Keep with next' paragra[ph mark to a point where the mark is removed, the heading properties are removed from the topic title and the Page break indication now extends across the entire page.
With Cursor placed at the commencement of the topic line again immediately prior to the # symbol, re-apply the 'Keep with next' paragrah command.  This applies the command on the 'Page break' line.
Re-apply Heading style to the topic line.  It now looks line this :-
Re-build project. Error messages 3018 and 3111 now both gone.
Yet another bug in this version now doubt.

    Peter G,
Thanks.  Tried that and no the problem does not present in a new project.  Oddly enough this started occurring in a new project that had these documents imported from  a previous project (word 2003 format into Word 2010 format).
So it doesn't occur by default in a new project, but does in an older project migrated from 2003 word format into 2010 format.  Go figure.
    David H.
Thanks to you for your suggestion.  Worked fine.  Not sure why all of a sudden I have to do this and why the same issue does not occur in new project by default,  Maybe a word 2003 to word 2010 save / convert issue ?
Nonetheless your suggestion and fix works well and far less painful than my clumsy solution.
Once again,  Thanks to both of you for your assistance

  • When posting, please post a new topic if you don't have an answer!

Occasionally you may be tempted to add your voice to a chorus of complaints. Unfortunately, if what you are here for is to get assistance for a problem which you can't find an answer for, trailing an existing thread with a second complaint, is usually considered bad form. It has been given the nickname of "threadjacking." Instead, when you don't have an answer, and are seeking an answer, start a new topic by clicking on the Discussions header links of the board below the big bold text "Apple Discussions" to locate the board most appropriate for your question. Once you have found the board appropriate for your question, above the posts on the upper left should be a "Post a New Topic" link. Use that link to create your own topic. If that link is not there, you have probably already entered another thread, and if that is the case, use the link Batch to Topic List link to return to where you can Post a New Topic.
Here are the advantages to not threadjacking:
    1. You will get a much wider audience of possible experts to help you out.
    2. The original poster of the thread will not get advice that does not pertain to their situation, and you won't get advice that doesn't pertain to your situation. You wouldn't want either you or the other person to get the wrong advice and try something which could make them get more in a hole.
    3. The experienced users with this situation won't get confused who they are offering advice to and give the wrong advice to the wrong person.
    Thank you!

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

Dear users of the SDN ITS forum!
Please provide the following basic information whenever you start a new topic thread to discuss your question/problem with other SDN users. By providing this information right from the beginning of your thread, you minimise the risk of any misunderstandings and other users can help you more quickly.
    <b>1) ITS Release</b>
Please state which ITS release you are using! For the standalone ITS 6.20, please include the patchlevel version, SAP Note 550554 describes how to do this (earlier ITS releases are not supported anymore - please upgrade to the latest ITS releases first and check if your problem still exists). For the integrated ITS 6.40, please add the support package level and the kernel patch level of the SAP Web Application Server.
Until this information is provided, the community is unable to offer you proper help and you will very probably be asked for the information in the first reply.

  • I would like to start a topic but...

I want to start a new topic but I want to use a photograph as a reference.
I have put a pic up on 'image shack', I have some code to use in a forum (this one) and I have checked the quick edit help. Can anyone tell me how to place the code. Do I type my message then copy the code below the message. Will this place a clickable thumbnail in the post so that anyone can view the pic on the host server?
    Thanks in advance.

    use http://www.pixentral.com/
    <br />
<br />then when the image is uploaded, select the "HTML" code under your image... it'll produce a thumbnail that we can click on for a full size image. like so:

  • Starting new task question

    Hi,
is there a way we can see the logs of task for all Function module that executed STARTING NEW TASK?
for UPDATE TASK we can see it through SM13.  is this the same with STARTING NEW TASK?
    Thank you.

STARTING NEW TASK and UPDATE TASK are related to different topics.
STARTING NEW TASK is used to call a remote-enabled function module, see chapter "Using Asynchronous Remote Function Calls" in SAP NetWeaver help.
UPDATE TASK is used to make major changes to the database, see chapter "Update Techniques" in SAP NetWeaver help.
Due to the different purposes there is no equivalent of SM13 for STARTING NEW TASK. If you are the developer of the code using the STARTING NEW TASK feature you can readily track your calls with Business Application Logic (BAL), for instance, documentation see program SBAL_DOCUMENTATION.

Hi Peter, thanks for your input.
I eventually found out what was causing this, but no idea why it should be an issue. The clue was in the error message: "...faulting module IMAGEAPI.dll..." - so I figured it was something to do with an image.
This wasn't happening on the sample projects only on the projects that I created myself. These projects all share a common property, and that is that  the topic template contains a placeholder graphic that will (in the individual topics) be a link to another topic. In order to make life easy for myself, I added the placeholder to the template and then attached a hyperlink to '#' to it. It was that that caused the problem - if I remove the dummy '#' from the picture the problem goes away.
It doesn't explain what the issue was, but it fixes it - even though I lose the convenience of having a ready-made hyperlink on all my new graphics.
    Cheers
    J.

  • Marking new Topics as "New" with a different graphic

I went through Skinny and dug up the "Marking TOC pages as
'new'" topic, so it sounds like a good thing to have for the
    particular project I'm working on.
    1. Changed one of the TOC in the project to start with an
    asterisk.
    2. Genned WebHelp.
    3. Went to the output folder and opened whthost.js.
    4. Found
    sHTML+="target=\""+sTarget+"\" "; and added
    if (getItemName(nIdx).charAt(0) == "*")
    sHTML+="href=\""+_textToHtml_nonbsp(getItemURL(nIdx))+"\"
    title=\""+sName+"\">
    <img alt=\""+sAltString+"\" src='YourImageName.gif'
    border=0 align=\"absmiddle\"> "+sName+"
    </a></nobr></p>";
    else
    after it.
    5. Modified
YourImageName.gif to an already-existing graphic in the
project. (I didn't want to add a baggage file, and just wanted to
see the final result to test it, so I picked one that the project
    already uses).
    6. Ran my project. This is where it gets caught in an endless
loop. The status bar at the bottom of IE quickly alternates between
messages of "Error on page" and "Opening file .../whtdhtml.htm..."
Is there something that I've missed that I need to modify in
    whtdhtml.htm?
This is happening on Internet Explorer 6.0.2.
    Any ideas on this one?

    I see what happened.
The sHTML line should all fit onto one line.
    sHTML+="href=\""+_textToHtml_nonbsp(getItemURL(nIdx))+"\"
    title=\""+sName+"\"><img alt=\""+sAltString+"\"
    src='bookopen01.gif' border=0
    align=\"absmiddle\"> "+sName+"</a></nobr></p>";
    Now it's working fine.

  • Posting New Topics VERY unintuitive.

I want to post a simple question. I would think that posting a question would not require me having to search "how to post a question". It's VERY annoying that it's not obvious. When I click on a category there should be an obvious link on every page. Even the FAQ's and Help pages, while they make is sound simple, are misleading since a "Post a New Topic" link does NOT show up on every page. VERY, VERY frustrating. Less experienced users should not be made to feel like simpletons as these forums were initially designed for specifically for them. In this day and age it should not be that difficult to make things more intuitive.

I would think that posting a question would not require me having to search "how to post a question".
    I think that's true.
I also think that your larger point about the shortfall of intuitiveness of the navigation of AD must be at least partly true. Arguably, evidence to that is in the fact that this Feedback forum is inundated with people posting technical questions.
On the other hand, there is a very clear notice at the top of this forum explicitly requesting that technical issues not be posted here. Links to the main page and instructions about how to go about choosing the appropriate forum in which to post technical questions also appear at the top of this forum. These admonitions and instructions are repeatedly overlooked and/or ignored, however, and this leads me to believe that even if explicit instructions about how to locate an appropriate forum in which to ask a question were added to the top of the main page at Apple Discussions, they would also be overlooked or ignored by at least some people.
One might argue (and they have) that in addition to the suggestion that "+If you need help using Discussions, check out the Help & Terms of Use link in the sidebar to the right+," these or similar instructions should be added to the top of the main page, at minimum, and at the top of the list of forums on the category pages as well, to assure that people who are inexperienced in using this kind of site will be steered in the right direction. Others (including Apple) might disagree, pointing out that the vast majority of users who have ended up on the main page of Apple Discussions know what discussion boards are, have navigated to Apple's Discussions purposefully, and can intuit that the lists of hardware and software items on the main page +might at least be a starting point+ in their search for an appropriate place to begin looking for the place to post their questions.
When I click on a category there should be an obvious link on every page.
Of course, there are obvious links on category pages, but these links are to individual forums. It's rather like going to a restaurant: When we are seated at a restaurant, we are handed menus. In this sense, the Apple Discussions main page can be likened to a restaurant menu. In a restaurant menu, items are divided into various groups; the better the restaurant, the greater the number of categories of food items that are listed on the menu. For example, my favorite restaurant here in New York is an Italian place on Thompson Street with a fair sized menu, divided into categories, including +Antipasti E Salumi+, Primi, Secondi and +Piatti Del Giorno+; there is also a separate menu containing the categories, Formaggi, Dolci, +Caffe E Te+, and another containing +Vino Dolce Al Biccchiere/Bottiglie+, +Vino Liquoroso+, +Grappa e Acquavite e Brandy+, Amaro, and Sambuca. For the purpose of our analogy, let's just focus on the dinner menu:
At the top of the list of categories on the dinner menu is +Antipasti E Salumi+, under which are listed Verdura which includes various small vegetable dishes; Carne, which includes various small meat plates; Insalate, under which various salads are listed, and Pesce, under which are listed various small fish plates. A lot to choose from! How do we decide?
Well, we know it's not enough to tell our server that we want an antipasto (just as it's not enough to tell Apple Discussions' server that we have a question about our Apple product). We need to tell them which antipasto we want. There again, it's not enough to tell our server that we'd like a verdura (as it is not enough to click on the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard link on the main page here); we need to be specific about which verdura we want (just like we need to choose a specific aspect of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard about which to post a question) in order to be rewarded, which, in a restaurant, means we are able to enjoy our tasty vegetable plate, and, here in Apple Discussions, that we are able to find a 'Post a new topic' link.
In the end, as I have learned to navigate restaurant menus, I, and most users, have been able to intuit how to navigate the menus here at Apple Discussions without ever having read the Help pages. You can, too!
    Good luck!

  • Is it better to post a new topic if a problem recurs?

I just changed a topic from answered to not answered in the Safari forums because it recurred again. Should I have started a new topic? It has to do with Safari not connecting to the internet. Yesterday I fixed it so when it happened again, I tried the same solution, but it didn't work. So I changed the topic to not answered. then thought, maybe it was better to start a new one? Figured this was the forum to ask that question before starting over?
    thank you.
    Laverne's Mom

    You're welcome!
I am starting to take serious notes as to what I am doing on Safari so that I can pinpoint (hopefully) when it happens. I do know that accurate information about when and what will help all of you help me figure out how to permanently fix it
That's the best thing you can do. You'd be surprised how few do and then try to come to the AD to seek help but don't remember key things that could correct the problem more quickly if at all.
I'm sure ~Bee will pop in over there to add help if she can.
    good luck,

  • Posting new topics

Other than here I've NEVER been able to figure out how to
post a new topic. How to I post a new topic in the quicktime forum? The little icon I clicked here to make this post doesn't exist over there.

The little icon I clicked here to make this post doesn't exist over there.
If you're logged in and you're not seeing the "Post a New Topic" link, then you're probably looking at a category page, rather than an actual forum page where you can post. A category page lists the forums within that category. Click on the relevant forum in that list and you'll be able to post there.
For example the iPod category page lists a large number of more specific iPod forums in which you can post, starting with "Using your Fifth Generation iPod" and "Connecting the Fifth Generation iPod to Windows" and on down the list from there.
If you're still not sure which kind of page you're on, look at the URL in your address bar. A category page will end with "categoryID=nnn" while a forum page will end with "forumID=nnn."
