Startx: xf86OpenConsole: Cannot Open /dev/tty0 (Permission Denied)

running startx as normal user gives me the following error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot Open /dev/tty0 (Permission Denied)
it seems to run ok as root... but I obviously don't want to be doing that all the time. I guess that means its a permission issue, but what, where, when and how?
I searched the forums and found one article from last year with similar errors after an updated Xorg package, apparently that was fixed and it gave me no insight as to how to manually fix this error.
I'm just starting with Arch and its my first 'advanced' distro (been mostly running ubuntu up until now)... hence, I've never had to set up Xorg etc before.

$ groups
users
$ls -l /dev/tty0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-10-17 08:54 /dev/tty0 -> vc/0
I've already tried adding the group 'users' to /dev/tty0 but when I restart it just goes back to 'root'
When I do add the group 'users', it seems to get past the problem with /dev/tty0 and it gives me this error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 7 (Permission Denied)

  • Dd: /dev/disk2: Permission denied

I have an Ubuntu .iso image I'm trying to burn to DVD so I can (re)install it on another machine. I know the image is good; I've used it before (though the disk I burned it onto doesn't appear to be working any longer). When I try to burn the image with Disk Utility, it gives me the error: "Unable to attach 'imagefile'. (not recognized)".
So I go to the Terminal, use diskutil list to determine where the disk is mounted (I've tried this with both the internal burner and with an external burner, with the same results), unmount the disk, and try to sudo dd it.
I consistently get the error message listed in the topic's title: "dd: /dev/disk2: Permission denied". Just for kicks, I tried to do the same thing with a different image, with the same results (with dd, anyway; the other image seems to be mounting/burning just fine in Disk Utility).
Any help will be much obliged.

DU should be able to burn the image. Open DU and click on the Burn icon in the toolbar. You'll be prompted with a file dialog. Locate the .iso file and select it then click on the Burn button. Your optical drive should slide open or you will be prompted to insert a blank disc (depends on what type of optical drive you have.) Insert the blank disc and wait until the Burn button activates and click on it.

  • Cannot make folder /cookies: Permission denied (error 13)

I can not successfully install the Creative Cloud Installer. I continually get
    Error Starting Creative Cloud
cookies dir: cannot make folder /cookies: Permission denied (error 13)
I have tried verifying disk permissions using the disk utility on my macpro retina. This is a brand new computer (less than a week). I've also tried changing cookies permissions to allow for third party cookies.
I don't know what the problem is.

I had this same irritating problem. Thanks to this forum and some helpful instructions from Adobe Customer Support online I have been able to sort it out. For those who've read this far down the thread, here are the instructions from Adobe, which worked a treat - and also cured a problem I was having with Adobe Reader XI for Mac (internal error message meaning I couldn't use Reader and none of my pdfs would open with Preview either!)
    1. Please Open Finder and click on Applications on left hand side of Finder window.
    2. Navigate to Applications->Utilities ->Adobe Installers. Double click on Uninstall Adobe Creative Cloud and follow the onscreen instructions.
    3. Delete Adobe Application Manager folder from Applications/Utilities.
    4. Open Finder. Click on Go in Finder menu and choose Go to Folder. Type /Library/Application Support/Adobe in Go to folder and press return key. You will have Adobe folder open in Finder.
    5. Delete AdobeApplicationManager and OOBE folder.
    6. Click on Go in Finder menu and choose Go to Folder again. Type ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe in Go to folder and press return key.
    7. Delete AAMUpdater and OOBE folder from Adobe.
    8. Click on Go in Finder menu and choose Go to Folder again. Type ~/Library/Application Support and press return key.
    9. Right click on Adobe folder and choose Get Info.
    10. Click the lock icon at bottom of Get Info window to unlock it, then enter an administrator’s name and password.
    11. Click on + icon and choose select all users on pop up and window and choose Select.
    12. Change the permissions for all Users to Read and Write.
    13. Choose "Apply to enclosed items" from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear).
    14. Try installing the Creative Cloud Desktop application from below link.
    https://ccmdls.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/KCCC/1/osx10/CreativeCloudInstaller.dmg
Please launch Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop application and check if you are able to sign in.

  • FTP exception: Can't open passive connection: Permission Denied

I have a File sender adapter, with FTP as transport protocol.
The adapter polls a directory each 60 seconds.
All works perfectly but <b>sometimes</b> I get the following error :
Channel CC_GBL_FlatFileSender: Error connecting to ftp server ...: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.ftp.FTPEx: 425 Can't open passive connection: Permission denied.
And 60 seconds after, no more error.
Any idee of why I get this error occasionally ?
In the sender file adapte, data connection is set to Passive.  Do I have to set it to Active ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Laurence

    Hi
    Data Connection
         -  Active
In active mode, the server establishes a data connection from its data port, port 20, to an end point chosen by the client.
         -  Passive
In passive mode, the client establishes a data connection to the port required by the server.
The default setting is a passive data connection. Only change this setting if you have a specific reason. This is what is recommended by SAP.
It is possible that Passive FTP mode may terminate session.
In this mode the server "listen" on a data port (which is not its default data port) and to wait for a connection rather than initiate one upon receipt of a transfer command. The response to this command includes the host and port address this server is listening on.
In the FTP protocol two ports are normally used, 20 and 21.
Port 21 is the control channel in which requests such as PUT, GET, and PWD are sent to the server.
Port 20 is the data channel in which actual files, folders and directory
    listings are sent.
Normally, when you connect to an FTP site, the site establishes the data
connection to your PC (the client) on Port 20. However, if the site allows
passive transfers, you can have your PC establish the data connection. It is
recommended that you use passive mode for most transfers.

    Hi Tom,
I stepped back and removed the BMP180 entirely. The UU remained.
    Googling "raspberry pi UU" yielded
      https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/581
    which referenced
      http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=31420&p=612513#p612513
    which referenced
      https://www.hifiberry.com/forums/topic/i2cdetect/
    which reccomended blacklisting snd_soc_wm8804
    Googling "what is snd_soc_wm8804" yielded
      http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=81750
    which explained the whole matter
Anyhow the UU is gone. Only 77 is detected now. The mystery continues which I accept as an interesting challenge.

I know it's solved, but I had the same issue today and fixed it like this:
Add the following to the "mem" section in /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules:
    SUBSYSTEM=="mem", KERNEL=="null|zero|full|random|urandom", MODE="0666"

You do not need to involve Creative Cloud to install/try the trial version of CS5...
You can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

HI when installing the MARS ver 6.0.1 we are getting this error sfdisk:Cannot open /dev/sda for reading, but found that this a bug for that ver BUG id : CSCso92379 - Cannot open /dev/sda for reading" error seen on installing Gen1 GC
So we tried installing the ver 5.3 now also getting the same error, pls let me know is this a hardware issue or a bug

It sounds like there may either be a problem with the RAID controller [configuration] or, though unlikely a hardware failure. You'd need to check the RAID controller BIOS to see if there's a hard disk drive problem or RAID configuration problem. Also check RAID controller is damaged as disks are not recognized at all.
Rebuild the Raid and reimage the appliances.
