Swollen battery in Applecare that Apple won't replace

I've got a Macbook Unibody which is still covered under AppleCare, and I discovered that the battery has swollen and became slightly bigger, enough for the battery cover not to close properly. The battery has only 200 cycles and is still on 84% capacity, and I have AppleCare until November 2011, so I thought it was a battery defect and took it to my local Apple reseller. (no Apple stores here yet )
So, after two days I was told that they had checked my Macbook and found the cause for the battery to swell up: there was a lot of dust on what seems the output of the processor disippator (a place I wouldn't be able to reach myself to clean, as I would have to disassemble it), and that dust caused the processor to become hotter (even though I hadn't noticed it) and that too much heat caused the battery to swell up.
But the funny thing is: Apple won't authorize the battery replacement, because they say it is not a battery defect, as it was caused by the processor heating because of the dust that got there by "normal usage" and I couldn't clean by myself. They told me I should have got there by the time I noticed my laptop becoming hotter than before so they could have cleaned it, but now it was just too late.
So I was left with the laptop and the swollen battery again, after I refused for them to charge me for the battery a little bit more than the price that I could get it from the Apple Store.
Does anyone have any experience with swollen after normal usage batteries? Will the battery swell up more if I keep using it? Is there any way I can try to convince Apple to give me a new battery? (after all, batteries aren't supposed to swell up, aren't they?)

The problem here is that you are relying on a third party's service. Swollen batteries are not all that uncommon. While people sometimes have difficulty getting a replacement if their warranty has expired or if their battery has gone beyond it's standard cycle count, in your case neither applies. In almost every case that this has happened where the cycle count was low and the machine still under warranty, Apple has replaced these batteries. You may not have a local Apple store, but you should give Apple a call:
http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
Explain your situation to them as well as the unhelpful support from your local reseller. Typically, they can mail you a new battery.

  • Apple won't replace my ipod battery

Ive had my ipod mini for around 9 months now and the battery cuts out after around half an hour of playing time. It comes back on but soon cuts out again. I sent it back to apple and they have just sent me it back today telling me that the ipod is satisfactory and that they won't replace it. Does anyone know if you can get replacements from a local apple store??
      Windows XP

they don't advertise this program properly. they will only replace the battery if they deem that it needs to be replaced. my battery has been sucking (my mini's over 2 years old) and they refused to replace its battery.

  • Apple won't replace dead pixel?

    Hi,
somebody told me that Apple will not replace your iPod if you have a dead pixel, you have to have a few dead pixels for them to replace it.
Does anybody know if this is true, or had any experience with Apple Returns and Repairs with a dead pixel?
Its just that I had a dead pixel on my iPod video, I sent it back to them, and now they sent me an email telling me that they couldn't find anything wrong with it and they are returning my original iPod back to me.
So I don't know whether I should send it back to them again if they are just going to return it to me again.

    Thanks for your help dude.
Think you just saved me some time sending it back again.
Not that it will change anything but I want to moan anyway...
on a tiny iPod screen a dead pixel is alot more obtrusive than one on a large Mac monitor.
I guess I'll have to hope a few more pixels die on me before my warranty expires.

  • I am aware that apple does not replace the battery for my ipod touch 4th generation, but I wanted to know if i purchase a replacement battery, can they recommend someone to replace the battery for me?

I have a ipod touch 4th generation, 32gb, purchased at least 3 years ago.  It will not hold a charge, so I would like to purchase a replacement battery.  Can the apple store recommend someone to install the battery for me once I purchase it from them?

Apple does not repl;ace the battery in your iPod. They exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new battery.
A third-party place like the following will replace your battery for less. Google for more.

  • Is it true that Apple will not replace an LCD under warranty?

I have an iPhone 4s, that I bought around a month ago. It is under warranty. I have been having issues with the phone since the day I received it in the mail. One being that I get dial tones and/or other static-y noises at the beginning of all outgoing and incoming calls, usually for about 2-3 seconds. The phone also randomly dies, even if it has 15, 20 sometimes even 30 percent battery left. The biggest issue I've ran into is the front screen of the phone popping off. Not completely, but enough to notice. The way I can tell when it happens is because the home button will feel weird, like majorly indented and then light can be seen coming out through the side of the phone. The problem is that each time this happens the screen would get little crack-looking disturbances or just discolored all over, and then tonight it popped out AGAIN while I was talking to my mom and then screen went black and the phone just started making a weird bonging sound over and over. For lack of a better term, I'm ******.
The phone itself is perfect. No scratches, no dents, nothing. It's always been in a case.
My husband is adamant that I'm wasting my time because Apple will not replace an LCD screen, but obviously the phone has had issues since I received it and it's not anything that I did! I spoke to a very nice representative who made an appointment at the Apple Store to have it checked out. Has anyone had any luck with getting something like this taken care of under warranty? Thanks!

The AppleTV update was not mandatory. It is not applied automatically, and will continue to function without an update. Others have reported successfully exchanging updated AppleTVs for models with earlier versions of the OS when there was a problem with the update.
Anybody whose equipment does not match Apple's specifications (e.g. those with TVs that do not have built-in HDMI ports, or that cannot accept a 720p signal) should be very wary of installing any updates. As these are not supported displays, Apple is unlikely to test updates on them, and it is possible that an update will cause loss of function. It would be wise to wait to hear from others with similar TVs before you decide whether to apply an update. This also means that if you own an unsupported TV, it is possible that you will not be able to get access to future updates that include features that you would like to have.
Frankly, if you have an unsupported TV and are dead-set against replacing it, you probably should consider returning or selling your AppleTV and buy a product, such as the Roku box, that supports your type of TV.

  • IPhone 4 (bought in December) power button is stuck. Apple won't replace it. Why?

    Well that's exactly it.
I have an iPhone 4 that was purchased in December of 2011. I took the phone to the Apple Store to get it looked at, and they won't replace it for free. They are asking for $150 for the entire phone to be replaced, which doesn't make any sense.
The phone doesn't have any type of physical damage, it hasn't been dropped nor hitten. What can I do? If this is how Apple is going to treat their customers, I would rather take my business elsewhere. I've purchased multiple Apple products, this being my fourth iPhone and I've never had a problem before.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Ditoh1

Go back to the Apple Store and ask why?

  • Is it true that apple won't ship the iPhone 6 until 4 weeks from now?

a t-mobile rep. told me that because apple has a lot of pre-orders they won't send their phones till 4 weeks from now even the people that ordered mid-night thursday.

    Welcome to the community.
We here are users like yourself, not Apple. We have no way of knowing the answer to your question, or any like it. You cite a service provider's rep. He probably knows much more than anyone here.

  • Apple won't replace my iPhone and wiped it completely saying it would fix the problem but it hasn't..

So basically I took my iPhone in to be fixed. It's got a problem where the wifi won't switch on nor will my Bluetooth. Knowing I only brought a new iPhone about 4 months ago thought that's ok I'll get it fixed or a new one.
How wrong was I? Not only were they rude to me and talked down the me. They also completely wiped my phone convincing me it would fix the problem. Well it didn't. I actually left the store crying as I had no contacts, photos, or apps.
They refused to help me any further without me buying a new phone. They said that when I got my new phone from them to replace another broken headset I only got 90 days warranty. They said I signed for it. In my opinion they should make it clearer and tell you this.
I am disgusted at the way I've been treated and think that for such a big company they really don't help themselves.
Just wondering if anyone could help shed some light on this?

OK. So the phone you took them was an out of warranty replacement for a phone you had previously... Is that correct? They told you the truth. The out of warranty replacement has a 90 day warranty. (if the phone it was replacing was physically damaged, the OOW replacement will inherit the balance of the original warranty if it's longer than 90 days.)
If you were backing up and syncing your phone on a regular basis, as intended, you can restore all of your information exactly the way it was at the time of the last backup.
If you're unhappy with the way you were treated, go back and speak to the manager or call Apple and ask to speak to customer relations.
No one here can do anything. This is a user forum.

  • Apple won't replace my iPhone 5.

I recently got my iPhone 5 replace no longer then 4 monthsbecause the start button didn't work. I went to a Apple store, and they replaced it without any question. Now, my newly iPhone 5, the SIM card keeps disconnecting from my phone, so i made an appointment at the Genius Bar. They asked me what happened, and i told them "The SIM card keeps disconnecting, i turn the phone off and on about 5-7 times a day, and for the past 2 weeks or so, i left it disconnecting because it was too frustating to turn it on/off again" They said they will take it apart, and see if the phone was working properly. About 10 minutes of waiting, they came out and said "Looks like your SIM card slot, cercut had been disconnected. The replace cost would be about 350$ with tax". I though if it was the device problem they would replace it? I mean its only been 4 months.

A warranty replacement inherits the balance of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer. If I had to guess, I'd say the original warranty has expired.

  • Bulging trackpad, swollen battery? Help!

The trackpad of my 2010 MacBook Pro has suddenly - and most ominously - bulged upwards! From looking around online, I believe that it's due to a swollen battery. I asked my local Apple Authorised Service provider about this and they say (1) it'll cost upward of $400 to service and replace the battery and trackpad (2) Apple doesn't replace swollen batteries free even though it's a manufacturing defect.
    So here are my questions:
    (1) is it true that apple won't replace the battery even though it's a defect?
    (2) Would it be safe to carry the laptop on a long distance flight? Will the air pressure affect the swollen battery in any way? I don't want it exploding! I live outside the US, but will be traveling to the US soon so thought I might have better luck with the Genius Bar in CA.
    (3) any words of advice on what's the best option in my case? My laptop is nearly 4 years old, in otherwise great condition and working well.
Would be grateful for any help! Apologies if this has been handled elsewhere - am afraid I'm a bit of a doofus at all things IT....

First open the MBP and take out the battery.  You will need a #00 Phillips driver and a  #0 Triwing driver to extract the battery.  The Triwing driver is difficult to find.  Check Amazon.  Once removed, the trackpad may be functional.

It is not that unusual for an old battery to expand.  It has lasted 3 -4 years of service which is not out of line.  I doubt that we are dealing with a 'manufacturing defect'.

If possible, take the battery out as I suggested.  The airplane ride should have no effect, but the battery may just expand more regardless.

  • Late 2008 MacBook 13": Could old, swollen, battery affect my touchpad?

    Hello all:
    Late 2008 13" MacBook, Aluminum, 10.6.8
    Symptoms:
For the past 6 months my battery (original from new) fluctuates between 85% and 35% health (iStat Pro), and only holds a charge for 45 minutes, tops.
My model still has the removable battery, underneath the easily removable cover, held with a latching system.
The cover is now not flush with rest of body, bowed slightly outward in the middle along the latch line (inside edge, away from edge of body.)
At about the same time, I noticed that my touchpad has taken on a life of its own, sometimes cursor skitting across the screen, at times all I have to do is touch the trackpad and it responds as if I initiated the "click" function by pushing down.
Today, it just seemed to stop functioning. Moreover, I couldn't even get a forced quit, even with wired mouse plugged in.
Now, the only way I can get a click response is by pushing down HARD on lower center of touchpad. This is new today.
Two-finger scrolling still works fine, it's the click function that has gone wonky.
    It's been really hot today!
I've read on other fixit forums that this is a textbook symptom of a swollen battery, and the bulging cover sure seems to indicate this. I just figured that there was 5+ years of gunk and dog hair finding it's way into the contacts of the touchpad, but it looks to be a sealed component.
Before I flip out and take it to the closest MAC repair shop, not easy in southern Spain, and let them mess about with it and wipe out years of data, could it be as easy as replacing the batt?
Can I still find original or reliable OEM batt?
As it also looks like only one screw holds the touchpad in place, and I am WAY out of warranty, can I still find original Mac parts for the touchpad if this needs replacing too?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Steve
PS: Tomorrow I'm gonna go buy a 1TB USB drive and back up my HD, too!!!

    Bryan:
Ever so cool post. I am going into the local Apple Store tomorrow, here in Marbella Spain. I can't imagine they will honor a warranty problem 5.5 years after the fact, lappy bought in NYC, and registered, but sure worth a bit of insistence. I did buy an AppleCare policy back in December 2008. BTW, all, well worth the money!
I did do an experiment by removing the batt, but still plugged in. The access cover closed beautifully and flush, as if nothing wrong, but the trackpad still stiff and only responsive to "click" commands if I pressed HARD in a very small sector, middle bottom (facing the keyboard.)
Once informed, I had a look at the batt, and sure enough, she's bulging in the middle, exactly where the cover bulges. Funny that.
I will give it my best shot, but I can't imagine that Apple would cover replacement of the touch(track)pad after all these years.
How long ago did you report, and get satisfaction, from your similar (identical) problem?
    Best,
    Steve

  • Apple never accept replacement for their yellowish screen on my new iphone5s

I bought iphone5s few days ago and I reallized that my screen is yellowish. Applecare also agreed with yellowish screen on my phone.
but finally, Apple said it can not be replaced because yellow screen is not hardware failure..
I should see yellow color only instead of white for 2 years!!!!!!
Can you agree that? Anybody there to help me?

If either of you purchased the iPhone directly from Apple within the last fourteen calendar days, you should be able to return it for refund, though that policy will depend on the country you're in. If  you purchased from an authorized reseller, that reseller's return policy if any will apply.
If you're outside of any return policy, then if Apple Support says that they won't replace the iPhone, there's probably nothing you can do. Only Apple can make that determination and if they've refused replacement, I'm afraid that's the end of it. You can try calling Apple Support and asking to speak with Customer Relations and see if they can help, but if they can't, then you will have hit a dead end.
Note, however, that the yellow tint often fades across the first few weeks of use, so even if Apple refuses a replacement, you may find that matters improve over time.
    Regards.

  • How will i know if apple denied warranty replacement

Ive heard alot of horror stories that apple refuses to replace or fix phones ipads etc... under warranty and im just curious as to how i would know if my repair is going thru or if anyone knows what it would say on the repair status page ?? Im just curious bc i have been waiting a while without a phone and if anyone knows if they will email me saying your phone cannot be replaced etc... or if the repair status thingy will say something

    sherbear
On that page ( I am showing you mine - where I have no pending issues ) there is a pane on the right side that has two 'Folder-Like' icons - when you click one, it will open up another detail of that topic showing all current activity. If they are grayed out like mine, that means you have nothing in that system.
If you took your iPhone to the Genius Bar at the AppleStore, call the AppleStore and ask them your warranty question (they really should have told you up front, as they are very knowledgeable and helpful)

  • Swollen battery not being replaced by Apple

I have macbook with swollen battery, quite dangerous since the casing of the battery is coming down, so when I keep it on my lap, it is not flat anymore. Battery is woking, and I have taken great care over the years to keep the battery charged/discharged cycle going.
I spoke to Apple support and they said they need to get it checked with service center and they will replace it. I went to service center, and the service personnel said I need to have Apple talk to them directly!!! So, I could not get anything done at the service center.
I then spoke to Apple support again on phone and now they say, since the computer is outside 3-year window, we understand that it is dangerous, but we like you to pay for the battery replacement!! I have to pay for the replacement of battery that is functional!! I certainly do not want to pay for battery because I have a working battery, but Apple refuses to replace it even though it is dangerous to use!!!
I am quite certain this is wrong from Apple, please advise what should be done.
    Thanks.

Yeah the batteries being swollen aren't good at all....but you will have to pay for something like that for any company really. It's not under warrenty so yes u will have to pay for service charge. It's either that or get a new laptop.
The battery isn't "unsafe" if it's swollen. It swells to reduce built-up pressure, which yes bends the case. But you have to understand that companies don't give out free things for repairs all the time. It's like me going to ford with my '06 focus and saying my gasket went...replace it for free pls...but they will laugh because i'm out of warrenty.
On the other hand I hope you get something resolved.

  • I have a macbook air bought in 2010 wit liquid damage that might has affected the SSD card. I need to get my data but apple won't help. Authorized dealers never seem to have the same model to try whether the SSD card works. How can I get my data quickly?

    Hi
I have a macbook air bought in 2010. It has liquid damage that might or might not affected the SSD card. I need the data on my SSD card for work and I need it urgently. Apparently Apple won't get the data out, even if I have apple care... Licensed apple dealers need to have the same macbook air model so they can insert the SSD card and check whether the data is there, and they never seem to have one...
I'm really disappointed with apple. It's been two weeks and I haven't been able to find out whether the SSD card is holding my data. It can't take that long to do it in store... How can they sell a product and then wash their hands on the matter?
Anyway, enough with the apple rant. I need to get this data urgently so I need to find out how I can get it out of the card. The SSD card and data might be fine so I don't want to take it to a data recovery centre and get charged loads.
    Thanks for your help.
