Verizon DSL with DHCP and PPPoE
Hello,
I recently signed up for Verizon DSL (with a Westell 6100 modem) and I am connecting to it through a graphite Airport base station. It was initially set to use DHCP in the TCP/IP section. It would connect to the internet properly but after I stop using my computer for a few hours, I have to restart the base station in order to get the connection again. It was annoying to say the least.
Then switch to using PPPoE instead of DHCP. Now it works OK. Everytime I turn on my Mac, all I have to do is select my wireless network and I'm connected.
Could someone explain to me why, with DHCP, I had to restart my base station everytime?
Thanks a lot!
Hock, Welcome to the discussion area!
If your ISP requires PPPoE, it sounds like yours does, then you must PPPoE. Using DHCP in that situation usually doesn't work at all. You must have a neighbor or someone else on the network with an active DHCP server. Your ISP won't like that when they discover it.

Is the Linksys E4200 Dual Band Router compatible with DHCP and VPN?
Thanks,Linksys/Cisco E4200 are compatible with DHCP. Second, these Wireless-N routers are only capable of enabling the VPN traffic to pass through the device. You will need a VPN router and software to create the actual network to connect with your VPN client.

Verizon DSL with Third-Party Modem
I recently purchased a Netgear ADSL2+ modem and a Netgear AC1600 router to replace the Verizon Actiontech combo router-modem that came with my Verizon DSL service. I am posting this problem and solution for anyone else who is or may experience the same problem.
The Issue: the new Netgear modem would not connect to the internet. After several attempts using the setup wizard, trying different manual configurations, copying the Actiontech modem information, etc. the new modem simply would not detect or connect to the internet. The Netgear setup was getting stuck on indentifying a static IP address although the Verizon system uses a dynamic IP.
The Short Story: the solution I found was to disconnect all devices from the DSL for several hours (overnight or possibly shorter). I believe this allowed the Verizon system enough time to reset/erase the previous device MAC address, thus allowing the new device to establish it's own MAC address as well as establish a new dynamic IP address within the Verizon system.
The Long Story: this is an issue I was able to find on other forum posts throughout the internet. However, neither the Netgear tech support nor the Verizon tech support were able to identify the issue or solve it. The Netgear support was definitely the more helpful but ultimately they couldn't help me because the issue was within the Verizon system. The Verizon tech support was only able to go through their prescriptive check list before kicking the issue to the Advanced Tech Support. I was disappointed to find that this is just a ploy for getting customers to purchase a monthly subscription to tech support. What makes the situation more frustrating was that I was that the Verizon support technician kept telling me that they know the issue and could manually reset the MAC address on their end but first I would have to subscribe to the Advanced Support. The Advanced Support person turned out to be nothing more than a salesman with limited technical knowledge. The Advanced Tech Support salesman then refused to reconnect me to the standard tech support or connect me to a manager. In the end, I gave up and went to bed frustrated only to find that the device worked instantly the following morning. Verizon DSL Tech Support and Slow Upload speed
We have been having considerable issues for 16 months with Verizon DSL and numerous chat sessions/calls to Verizon tech support. They verified that the upload speed was 768Kbps. Every site showed 360 - 370 Kbps.
Finally a technician came to the house and confirmed that the maximum upload speed at that location was 384. How could tech support be lying the whole time? Many times I point blank said 'why is the modem set to 448?'. They said the PCs would be faster than that. When the VZ techs come in through our PCs with Citrix remote support, they are dumbfounded that that they only got 27 Kbps - they ALWAYS forgot to realize the Citrix session is taking some the upload bandwidth to see my video - DUH
The worst part is the billing. We have been paying for something that is impossible to get. They are only willing to backdate a refund for 3 months because we never raised a billing issue. Um, thats because you lied about the speed. Visit http://192.168.1.1/ and tell me what you see mentioned as both the download and upload speed that the modem reports it being connected at.

AE & Verizon DSL with Westell 6100 Configuration Settings Question
Hello,
Has anyone configured their Airport Extreme with Verizon DSL using a Westell 6100 modem in the last few months? I'm wondering if you have any particular tips or have a set of screen shots of the process. I'm walking my mother through the process remotely and having some issues. Any help would be appreciated!
I'm specifically wondering whether I have to set the modem into bridge mode first, then use the AE to log into Verizon service via PPoE? Do I need to call Verizon & tell them my AE's MAC address first?
Thank you,
ChrisIs there an "Airport Extreme User's Guide"? When I look at the manuals available for download under Apple's support page for Airport Extreme and Airport Express, I see a "Airport Extreme Card User's Guide," but not one for those of us with Airport Extreme base stations. Am I missing something?
My Verizon DSL (also via Westell 6100 DSL modem, just like Chris') works fine with my desktop, but when I power up a G3 iBook, I have to wait forever for it to boot if it's in range of my home network. I'm trying to fix that problem, so I'm wondering if I need to reexamine the way my DSL modem and base station are configured, just like Chris. -
Verizon DSL speed drop and constant re-connects
I was recently having constant (10 times?) dropped internet connection during the day. After the standard several hour discussions with Bangalore, I was sent a new modem. Now, I connect at 4.5 download speed instead of 5.2- 5.7. Further, this modem (Dlink) seems to automatically reconnect when I lose connectivity. Nice... but does not fix my problem. I got back on with Bangalore (yea, not happy with this) and they told me that 4.5 is what I am paying for. Well, this is a monopoly. I am fatigued from getting ticket numbers that the next day are automatically closed out. My internet service is pretty cheap compared to Comcast. But now, it no longer works correctly. I have a contract. I am just ranting a bit. Anyone else suffering like this? Lemme know.
It's a bummer the newer D-Link modems as of right now don't have a known way of getting the Transceiver/DSL Line statistics from them. Right now it's up to Verizon to get those statistics and present them to the customer or to use their best judgement on them. If you have an older modem sitting around that can display the Transceiver Statistics, it would be nice to see them.
While you're at it, certainly double check all of your filters. Make sure they are not installed backwards or are otherwise not installed on devices that are attached to the phone line. Alarm panels and Satellite Receivers need to be filtered too. PA systems as well.

PXE boot issue with DHCP and SCCM server on different subnets
I'm working with a client on the operating system deployment module of SCCM.
Their network configuration currently has a single large subnet for client
computers with a DHCP server on the same subnet. The SCCM subnet is
configured on a seperate subnet with no DHCP server on the subnet. We want to
configure client computers to be able to boot using the PXE client to deploy
OS images to the machines but can not get PXE-boot to work correctly.
Also, the client does not want to make changes to their network
infrastructure routers or switches to remedy this problem. Are there settings
on the DHCP or SCCM servers we can implement to make this work? If so, what
needs to be installed or configured on each server. We currently already have
WDS installed on the SCCM server and the SCCM server is configured as a PXE
Service Point within SCCM. Both WDS and the PXE Service Point seem to be working fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

WRT54G & Verizon DSL with Westell 6100g
Ok here is my problem. I use utorrent for all my downloads. Recently the old wirespeed modem gave up the ghost and Verizon sent me one of their new Westell 6100g. I port forwarded the verizon modem, then briged it to my router. But for some reason utorrent isn't recognizing the port being open. I know my port is forwarded correctly via the modem because when I connect directly through the modem everything works fine. But when I throw the router in the equation that's when it gets squirrely. I removed the port forward exception from my router page because Verizon doesn't offer static IP's to non business customers anymore. And it had no effect enabled or disabled. Just curious if anyone can help me understand why I can't open the port when everything is connected.
As you mentioned in the previous forum that...whenever you connect directly to the modem, everything works fine. It means modem is still not in the bridge mode...So first of all you need to convert the modem into the bridge mode..Then do the PPPoE settings on the router...For instruction click here .
Now, Click on "Administration" tab and disable the option UPnP and click Save Settings...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Triggering" subtab... On the first line in Application box type in ABC, Under Triggered Range in the start port type in 6881 and End box type in 6999, Under Forwarded Range in the start port type in 6881 and End box type in 6999 and check the enable box, click Save Settings once done... -
Cisco RV180 problem with DHCP and Vlan

vlan2
will be for office use with the ip 192.168.10.1. I need for this DHCP enabled to give computers the correct ip in form 192.168.10.x. I will be configuring the static DHCP later on for those comps.
vlan3
will be for management with the ip 192.168.3.1. I don’t need DHCP will be using a static ip.

Everything works, on port 1 the servers work with their static ip, on port 4 the office computers receive the correct ip from DHCP, 192.168.10.x and even on port 3 the dhcp works for my management ip. But randomly some computers start losing connectivity, some regain it but some won’t connect even if I use a static ip corresponding to their vlan. When I say they won’t connect I mean I can’t ping their gateway or the management ip of the router (all vlans have inter vlan routing enabled so no matter on what vlan I am, I can access the web interface for the router). It;s not from security settings on the computers or firewall.
I discovered they will connect if I use the static ip corresponding to vlan1 82.xx.xx.xx, but not the ip corresponding to their port number. DHCP stops working for a while, it will recover randomly.
What am I doing wrong? I don’t have other switches I could use for DHCP, I thought I could use some managed switches to solve the DHCP problem.
Thanks,
RazvanI tried with only two vlans and set the DHCP active only for the office "vlan2". Computers receive the correct ip but some of them won't register on the network, i tried to set the ip manualy on the computers but that computer will still be isolated.
Ex: computer A receives ip 192.168.10.25, Subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.10.1, for 2-3 minutes i can access the router on 192.168.10.1 and the internet, after a random time interval the gateway won't even respond to ping. It's not from firewall related issues as i set to accept all both incoming and outgoing. If i set a manual ip corresponding to vlan1 "default" everything works. It's like that computer is isolated so i believe it has to do with the asignment of Tagged, untagged and Excluded settings on the vlans. -
Problems with DHCP and virtual PC connected to an AP in autonomous mode
I've a virtual machine (Windows 7) on my MacBook running on VMWare Fusion 6 running in bridge mode and can't get an IP address from my DHCP server. NAT mode in VMWare is working, but not an option.
I've tracked down the problem with Wireshark to the DHCP Offer that is dropped by the Cisco AP:
On the LAN side I've captured the packets and could see that the DHCP-DISCOVER from the Windows client was answered by the DHCP server with a DHCP-OFFER (all these packets are broadcasts in the same layer 2 network), but the OFFER was not forwarded by the 1142 AP running in autonomous mode, version 15.2(4)JA.
The problem looks to be similar to a previous discussion with WLCs where a solution is available meanwhile, see:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11350776/dhcp-issue-inside-vm-connected-wireless-network
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-4/configuration/guides/consolidated/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED_chapter_01110010.html#ID2828
Is there any solution for APs running in autonomous mode?
JanIt's already a while ago, but recently I got a new router at home and have upgraded the AP to 15.3(3)JAB as well. I'm not sure what the exact reason was, but the problem reappeared. I'm a Mac user and need the bridging mode at home for my home automation system that only comes with some windows tools. Therefore I spend some time to figure out more details and was able to solve the problem.
It turned out, that the AP needs to get an IP address by DHCP, otherwise the Windows machine never gets an IP address. I was able to see the DHCP discover broadcast from my virtual Windows PC as well as the DHCP offer from my home router. Even the packets from the DHCP relay agent (the AP with ip-helper) and the reply packet from the home router were shown with a DHCP debug on the AP and also with Wireshark on the LAN, but these broadcasts were not forwarded to wireless client. I've used Wireshark to capture packets on the WLAN adapter of my Macbook to verify that these packets were dropped on the AP and not on the Macbook with VMware Fusion. For some unknown reason the AP (acting as a bridge!) does not forward these broadcasts to the wireless client.
After playing around it turned out, that it WORKS if the AP itself is configured as a DHCP client and does not have a static address AND there is a DHCP entry for my virtual Windows PC like this:
ip dhcp pool Macbook
host 192.168.128.44 255.255.255.0
client-identifier 0100.5056.1234.56
dns-server 192.168.128.1
default-router 192.168.128.1
domain-name home.local
It's a bit weird that the AP itself needs to be a DHCP client and I can't explain why, but this setup works for me. I like to keep the DHCP server on my home router, so I've only added this DHCP reservation on the AP. -
Verizon DSL is horrible and misrepresented, can't get anyone on the phone so I can cancel
I tried the DSL service. After taking three weeks to get it working, I tested it and it is horrible. .5mbps down, .3mbps up, and pings 5 to 6 times what my crappy Comcast connection does. This service is useless.
Customer service appears to be even more useless. I've tried emailing to cancel service, they won't help. I've called multiple times to the supposed 24/7 number, it just keeps saying they're closed when I select the options needed to get to service cancellation.
HOW DO I CANCEL THIS CRAP?In order to cancel, you'll have to call when that department is open. The hours vary from location to location, but pretty much during business hours. This is a pain, but it's what you'll have to do.

Problems setting up Verizon DSL (DHCP) and AirPort Extreme
I have Verizon DSL with DHCP and old router (Linksys WRT54G). I've bought iMac and new router (AirPort Extreme) to connect to iMac wirelessly. I have a Windows computer connected to the Linksys WRT54G. Now here is the story. I can connect verizon DSL modem (it's in bridge mode) to PC directly and connect to the Internet. When I plug AirPort between the DSL modem and PC, auto-configuration doesn't work, AirPort utility says there is problem with internet connection. Router simply can't obtain IP address from verizon's DHCP server. I've tried to copy DNS server addressed from the IP configuration in Windows, the AirPort light went green and Windows indicated connection as successful, however I still cound't browse the Internet because gateway is not set. Any ideas how to make AirPort connect to the internet using DHCP instead of manual settings? I can try to do it from the mac if needed, I don't think it would make any difference though.
Welcome to the discussions!
Sorry, I can't quite track exactly what you are trying to do.
What would the network that you are trying to set up look like?
Modem>AirPort Extreme>Computers? Are you saying that you won't be using the Linksys in the new setup?
Sounds like you need to set the Airport Extreme up to supply PPPoE service (which the Linksys is doing now-if the modem is in bridge mode), but I will wait for your response before offering specific info.
If you've been fiddling with settings, we may need to do a hard-reset on the AX to start over. You should not be fiddling with DNS, etc. Almost always, these settings are done automatically when you have the device set up correctly. -
Verizon DSL download speed not as advertised?
Well, I've been a customer of Verizon for over 5+ years now and I've had Verizon DSL for quite some time. I'm not too sure if I have either the 256kbps package or the 768kbps download speed.
My DSL modem box model is the Westell 327W.
My problem is, it has always reached a download peak of 95.4kbps, as if it was capped at that download speed. The speed never really jumps up and down, just a steady download rate of 90 ~ 95 kbps through out the day, even though I use DSL.
There are no other users besides myself that uses the internet, and wireless settings have been turned off to ensure my internet is not shared.
I do not have any type of virus on my computer, since I've switch computers very often with fresh hard drives because I tend to upgrade alot.
My current hardware and operating system specs are:
ASUS Crosshair III Formula Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU [Black Edition / Overclocked: 4GHz]
2 x ATI XFX HD 5870 DDR5 (2 x 1GB) 2GB GPU [Twin Crossfire / Overclocked]
8GB (4 x 2GB) Crucial Tracer 1600 DDR3 RAM [Overclocked]
Corsair (850W Watt) Power Supply Unit
Cooler Master HAF 932 Full ATX Case
500GB Western Digital Caviar HD (Main)
250GB Western Digital Caviar HD
Prolimatech Megahalems AM3 CPU Cooler / Heatsink
2 x Asus DVD/CD Burner
Logitech G500 Gaming Laser Mouse
Logitech G15 2-Tone Gaming Keyboard
LG 30" LCD Widescreen Monitor [2560 x 1600 Resolution]
Windows 7 (64Bit) Operating System
Verizon Westell 327W DSL Modem
So I doubt it is hardware related.
My question is, is DSL suppose to be this slow and capped at 95 kbps download rate, or shall I contact a Verizon high speed internet rep because something is wrong?
also, can i "upgrade" to the new Verizon DSL with the new 1mbps download rate, for the same price I am paying right now? because I'm paying the same exact price for a slower/older version of DSL right now, which makes no sense, and I could cancel my DSL any time because my 2 year agreement has been reached years ago,
Thank you
Regards, Chris
Cheers.I doubt the problem is with your DSL service. The Transceiver speed correspond exactly to what the 768/Kbps plan would provide. The transceiver statistics say that your DSL link is running at Kbps on the downlink side, and Kbps on the uplink side. That is the provisioning for the old 768/128 Kbps plan. If you cannot get a Kbps downlink, and/or Kbps uplink it isn't because of the DSL link.
The DSL link runs at the lower of either the provisioned speed, or the highest speed your DSL Modem can negotiate with the Central Office Equipment. You are at the provisioned speed.
So either the problem is further upstream (beyond the DSL connection ), or on your computer, perhaps due to anti-virus, or firewall settings.
You might want to run a network analyzer program such as http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov/ from the Argonne National Laboratory, and take a good look at the details of the test.
