Water Damaged Blackberry Storm 2 9520

Hi, I got rugby tackled into a lake with my BB in my pocket a few weeks ago and the phone got wet. i took the battery out straight away and then dried the phone in a bowl of rice for a few days. when i put the battery back in the phone worked fine for about a week and then the screen started to stop working sporadically before packing up altogether. the little water damage indicator on the phone has turned red but the one on the battery hasn't. even then the red LED still came on when i put the battery in and the 4 little call, menu, back, and hang up lights came on too. about two weeks later i had the device charged in my bag when i went into an old wifi spot i used and i heard the phone recieving emails, bbms and facebook notifications so it all still worked. i was fiddling around with it the other day and i could see thep phone was trying to load up when i plugged it in although the screen was very dim as if the backlight wasnt working. after a long time (maybe and hour or so) i looked at it again and could make out that there were a list of specifications and numbers on the screen in tiny print and a small icon in the centre of the screen that said "reset" on it. i tried to click this but the touch screen wasnt working so it didnt work. i was wondering if anyone knew if theres any way of fixing the phone?

It is possible, though difficult, to replace the LCD and Capacitive screen on the 9520. For the cost, it really isn't worth it.
If your Storm is powering up, I'd MAKE CERTAIN you backup using the BlackBerry Desktop Software, immediately, so at least your data is preserved.

  • I want to repair my water damaged Blackberry

So I was having a great day at the beach and me and my blackberry went swimming. This happened over a week ago. I did the rice thing but it didn't matter my phone is broken. Is there any way I can figure out what is broken and buy a replacement part? I already found one website that has some replacement parts, but I still don't know how to tell what is broken. If there's some online guide on how to troubleshoot this or some company I can call it would be much appreciated.Thanks.

Colonel, I lost one due to salt water.
John Clark tried to get me to wash it in distilled water... but I waited too long.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Run, don't walk, to this FAQ:
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Got_Your_BlackBerry_Wet%3F
Given what you've already done since this happened, the chances of your success are much dimmer than had you done this right off the bat. The only thing predictable about moisture intrusion into a BB is that the results will be unpredictable. Given what you've done, I'd expect your BB to get worse and worse until it eventually dies. It could be later today, it could be in a month...there's no way to know, but I doubt you'll ever get this BB working again...there is likely much more damage inside than just the screen.
    Good luck!

    Hello,
    Well...things are what they are...

you need a sufficient active data plan to go along.if not the default blackberry browser will not retrive any web page.
With older OS levels (which, being an EOL product, is all that your 9520 can have), there indeed was a restriction on the native browser requiring subscription to an adequate data plan in order to use the browser, even via WiFi. That's just the way it was. With newer OS levels (only available, quite naturally, to newer non-EOL products), that restriction has been removed, and the browser can be used with WiFi only and no associated data plan. I wish it were different...but it is not.
BlackBerry devices indeed are very complicated...they were not really made for the casual user who depended on things to be simple and easy. And that's especially true for older device models, like yours is. Sadly, being an older and EOL device, there is no newer OS level available and hence, none of the newer easier to use features are available for that model.
I wish the situation were better for you, but sadly it is not, and is a consequence of choosing such an old and EOL device.
    Good luck!

  • Storm 9520 in reboot loop

I've got a blackberry Storm 9520 from my friend. It does not power on normally. It's stuck in a loop of reboots with ed light blinking. I have tried to reinstall device's OS many times with Loader, but it always stucks at "Reconnecting to JVM" after I plug in the cell, because it starts rebooting all over again.
Is there something I can do to make it stop rebooting all the time.
PS I even bought a new cell, in case the old one is dead - nothing helped - it's still rebooting.

    Follow this steps using JL_Cmder.
    1) Download JL_Cmder, unzip & install to the computer.
    2) Now, go ahead and sync all of your info or back it up. If you DO NOT, you will lose it ALL, obviously because we are wiping the device.
    3) If you do not have the latest version of the Desktop Manager, download it from HERE
Also, make sure, that you have the OS you are wanting to install to the device, installed to your computer as well.
    4) Make sure the Vendor XML file is deleted if you are going to install a OS that is not from your carrier. The vendor XML file can be located by going toC:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\ResearchInMotion\Apploader
    5) Make sure the DM is closed and plug in BB to computer via USB
    6) Go to the JL_Cmder on your computer and double click it to start. Now, this may take a few tries to connect, so keep trying until it does.
    7) On the first screen, Press any key to continue.
    8) Now, if your device uses a password, enter it now. If not, press "N"
    9) Press 4 to initiate the WIPE
    10) Press "Y" to continue
    11) Now type "blackberry" to continue
    12) Now you will see a white screen with a '507' Error Don't worry, this is what you want! You are now ready to install the OS.
    13) Open the DM
    14) Select Apploader and step your way to the finish. After the OS is installed, it will take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to reboot the device. DO NOT UNPLUG THE DEVICE UNTIL THE APPLOADER SCREEN SAYS "THE LOADING OPERATION WAS SUCCESSFUL!!
    15) Almost done. Now, with the DM still open go to the Main page and Select "Backup & Restore" and restore from the backup that was made before wiping.
That's it! You have now wiped your device with JL_Cmder
Make sure you follow the instructions, and you shouldn't have a problem. I hope this helps.
    Good luck!

  • What do I do if my Blackberry Curve gets water damaged? Lots of concerns...?

Okay, so I was getting a pedicure with my aunts and my phone fell off my lap into the tub of water at my feet, which was, thankfully, clean. The warranty had finished two months ago and i freaked out. I immediately pulled it out and my aunt advised me to pull the battery, SIM card and micro sd card out, which i also did immediately. I started tapping it on a towel from all sides to get most of the water out, i tapped until the water stopped coming out. I then left the back open and let it dry overnight, the next afternoon i put the battery back in and discovered that the keys were not working although the trackball would scroll through the home menu icons. I took the battery and other stuff back out, blow dried it on cold air for half an hour or so, and googled water damage. It said that i should keep the battery out of the device for 3-5 days. Im wondering, since i only had the battery in the device for about 2 hours and after it had partially dried out, will that have any permanent damage?
Also, the many websites i visited advised putting the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice to suck out the moisture and i was wondering, could i put the battery cover back on while in the bowl of rice without affecting its moisture sucking action? I dont want to take the chance of getting a bit of rice stuck in the little cracks and openings in the back, since people commented that that could happen.
One more concern of mine is that some websites said that i MUST take the blackberry apart and dry it out by hand with Q-tips and wipe everything down. They link to youtube videos of how to safely dissemble a blackberry device. I'm not exactly an expert and i dont want to ruin my phone so is that really a must or a just to make sure?
The phone took its swim on friday and im leaving it to dry til thursday to give it the full five days suggested. Should i keep going at it with a blowdryer? or can i leave it to air dry for the next couple of days?
When i had the battery in for those 2 hours, everything looked normal and i was receiving calls and getting messages and all the sounds and LED lights were working like normal, it was just the buttons that were not working, not the keyboard or the convenience keys or the lock and mute buttons at the top or the clicker behind the trackball although that was scrolling. The device didn't get a blurry screen or sound any different or anything, just the keys. Is there any chance it might come through?
    Thanks in advance

whenever any electrical equipments drop in water the best thing to do is to turn it off dry it and leave it for a week.
i always drop my phone in water >< but it still works=).
    Good luck

  • Blackberry z10 water damage

I dropped my phone down the toilet (haha yeah), it was fully submerged in water but I took it out straight away, took the battery out and dried off as much as I could with a napkin, I then shook it abit to get away access and placed it and the battery in plain rice and left them over night, he next morning the front and back camera where slightly condensated, I left the phone to dry for another day close to radiators where it could be slightly warm to dry, I out in the battery and out it in charge, the red flashing light came up, then the orange, now it is constantly green when still on charg, if I take the battery out and put it in again the screen lights up but nothing happens! Someone help!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
With water damage, results are completely unpredictable. Given what you describe, I would deduce that your device was completely destroyed by the event. The only thing you can try is the rice again, with that container in a warm spot, and leave it in the rice for perhaps 5 days. I honestly doubt it will help...having now already applied power to it prior to it being completely dry has likely done even more damage.
    Good luck!

  • Water Damaged Curve 8310

    Hello!
Unfortunately I put my Rogers Curve 8310 through the wash a couple of weeks ago, and no amount of rice and blow-drying could save it.  I've met people who have swam for half and hour and saved their BB's, but I figure it had no chance after soap and a spin cycle.
My question is this:  Does RIM have any program for replacing water damaged phones?  My best friend recently dunked his iPhone 3Gs in a toilet and they sent him a box the next day, he popped it in, and a week later he received a brand new 3Gs in the mail for $229 cdn, which is a hell of a lot more palatable than the $800 retail price.
    Thank you!

Not that I'm aware of. I don't know if water damage is covered under warranty. If you have insurance on your phone then you should be able to pay the detuctible to get another BlackBerry. If you contact your carrier they would be able to tell you.

  • Z10 water damaged

    Hi,
I have dropped my Z10 into the toilette. It was on, but when I've took it out it was off already. When I've tried to turn it on, red light appeared and for some seconds Blackberry logo appeared on the screen. The logo never reappeared again during my next tries to turn it on. I left it to dry indoors and about 24 hours later I managed to dissassemble it, taking out the motherboard, but not the screen. I rinsedthe motherboard and the inner back cover with distilated water and left it to dry. Tha some half a day later I also rinsed it with 96% Alcohol and left it to dry for some 5-6 hours and I also used the cool dryer for couple of minutes. I put it back together and no red light was on anymore neither. The phone doesn't seem to start at all, so I tried to check whether is a screen issue by connecting it via HDMI cable to a TV screen. No device was detected at all. For all my tries I used a spare battery and not the water damaged one. Is there any risk that I've caused a short circuit? Or is there any chance that the phone might still have some wetness inside? In any case now it's reassambled and buried in rice and I plan to keep it there for 2 days.
Thank you all for the suggestions and the ideas! You are a great team!

It is unfortunate that you tried to apply power before fully drying it out...such can cause permanent damage. The best method is to not apply any power until you have done all that you can to dry it.
    equilibrits11 wrote:

Yes, of course there is...but an an internet-distance, there is no way for anyone to know for sure.

    Also yes. Anything is possible.

I suggest 5 days minimum, and also in a properly warm place.

  • Minor Water Damage

The trackpad on my phone is working, but often only when I hold down alt, and when im on the bbm menu I cannot scroll onto specific chats. So, i found out I must have had water damage but I have not done anything serious to it - hence why the water indicators on my blackberry and on the battery are still completely white. So is there anything i can do to fix the tracker pad? Or do I still have to leave it to dry for a few days?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There is also a possibility that the board that contains the power port was affected by the spill.
It would have been better to have allowed the MBP to dry for a minimum of 72 hours before putting power to it. It's still possible that the board still has some moisture on it which is causing it to malfunction. It's possible that once the board has fully dried out, it will work again. If not, it will need to be replaced.
Water is generally the least harmful spill because it does not contain acids or sugars.
To test the charger, simply try one that is known to be good. Or test yours on another Mac. I imagine that the charger is OK, but if the tip got wet, it needs to dry thoroughly.
Look in the System Profiler and see what it has to say about the health of your battery. If it says normal, the battery is likely OK.
It sounds like there hasn't been enough time for anything to actually corrode, but lingering moisture could be causing your problems.
    Good luck!

May I know why OPERA mini is recognizing my torch as blackberry storm 2 9520. & it is not possible change device?

Probably because Opera has not updated it's registry of devices?
That's probably why, and for Opera the 9520 is the closest to the 9800 it knows.

  • Charged $299 for water damage, from an occassional rain drop in top charging port

I have been charged $299 for water damage to my motorola Droid. The water is from an occassional rain drop coming in the top charging port. I contend that is a design flaw. Anybody else run into this?
    Subject shortened.
Message was edited by: Admin Moderator

Of course it is a design flaw.  That is why I have a Casio Commando. My first smartphone was a Verizon blackberry and it was the worst for water damage...it got a foggy screen after being through a rainstorm inside a water resistant bicycle handlebar bag.  No phone should suffer damage from casual contact with water, folks.  People are 70% water after all.  You could put some of these in your pocket, go jogging, and ruin the phone...sort of defeats the purpose of the phone don't you think?
Good to see that Verizon was so reasonable about repairing it, don't you think?
