Hi, the wireless link seems to be done successfully because you can obtain an IP on the network.
What error message does the ping google.com command give ?
Also can you ping 129.105.49.10, the dhcp server which gives you an ip ?
After the dhcp setup, what default gateway shows the route command ?

  • VPN connection works, but can't ping or access any other device on remote network

I have an OS X Lion server at work (uses a static IP of 192.168.2.10). VPN is setup and works.
The work network's router has an IP of 192.168.2.1 and hands out IPs of 192.168.2.100-149. The VPN service is configured to hand out IPs of 192.168.2.150-170.
My home network uses a router with an IP of 192.168.1.1 and hands out IPs from 192.168.1.2-49
Both routers are using subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
The problem is, I can connect to the VPN just fine and access all services running on that same OS X server like iChat and AFP file sharing. But, I cannot directly access any other device on the office network like client machines or even trying to log into the router's GUI interface. Pings timeout, etc.
    Example:
At my home, I have a local IP of 192.168.1.12 and I connect to the work VPN. It assigns me an IP address of 192.168.2.151 and I'm able to connect to iChat on the OS X server that has a static IP of 192.168.2.10
In terminal, I try to ping the router on the work network (192.168.2.1) and I get no response (even though ICMP response is turn ON). I try to ping another OS X workstation on the work office, and get no response.
I'm not sure how to fix this, or whether I need to change settings on either router or the server.
Would greatly appreciate any insight or help on this. Thanks.

Check the DNS settings on the server (see my earlier post in this thread).

  • IPhone 5s can connect to wireless WIFI router but can not access internet.

iPhone 5s can connect to wireless WIFI router but can not access internet at work. The admin says the router lets my iPhone connect to LAN, but the iPhone does not have server IP to access the internet. I entered the server IP and port number in the HTTP PROXY fields but I still can not access the web. Any ideas?
    TIA

You IT person should be able to sort this out.  But, they seems to be too busy or disinterested to do this.  Suggest you provide the it person with an iPhone to get interested.
Any could be lots of things.
The best you can do is to get access to the admin setup for networking on a pc?  The internet settings are all the same.  Only what names the manufactures change from OS to OS. Check and compare parameters.
Phone works to internet at home, I assume?

Are they gone completely from the computer, or just no longer in the library? Check your movie media folder.
If your'e in the USA you can download some movies a second time, but not all (studio dependent).  You should always back up all media.

Hi , just bought a new macbook air. speakers show that they work but can't hear Skype or youtube. Can you help?

Have you checked that they are selected in System Preferences>Sound>Output tab?
If that doesn't help, and although I've never had to use it myself, I've read on here occasionally that launching Audio MIDI Setup in the Utilities folder and messing with the settings in there can sometimes sort out audio problems.

  • HT1386 Syncing works but can't hear audio with headphones.

Syncing works but can't hear audio with headphones.  Works without headphones though.

    Have you tried other headphones?
What does syncing have to do with the problem?
    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price

You are planning to do a number of things, so let me first make a suggestion about the overall approach. Instead of: "Before I make a clone of my hard drive I would like to fix this problem so I only have one account with everything in it but I do not know what to move ... or how to safely move it", I would make that clone immediately. And leave it alone until you have completed the reconfiguring and rearrangements you plan to do. This way, if you accidentally do something that needs to be undone, your clone is there with all the originals. By the way, this is the approach I always adopt, whenever I have to do anything drastic with an existing installation.
After all the rearranging etc. of the main drive you just make a new clone that erases the previous one.
The "Deano" account doesn't show up when I go to System Preferences:Accounts. So I assume I must have done something wrong.
This would suggest to me there is only one account, i.e. the principal, or Admin account. Why do you think there is a second account?
Where should I keep all my work files?
You can keep them where ever it is most convenient. As you know, you can create folders within folders, and there is nothing special about the Documents folder. Feel free to ignore it, if that's the way you want to work. You can direct your downloads, the default "save to" locations etc. to the appropriate places, as you work.
Can I create a new place for all my work files and just move them? I know I will have to update linked files within the various software packages but this is not a problem.
    By all means.
.. can it be directly on the HD like my Applications folder etc.?
Indeed, yes. Or even on a different hard drive (or partition of the same drive).
And best wishes for the new year, to you too.

  • 802.1X Athentication Successful but can't ping Default Router. PSK works fine

Got an interesting scenario. I am labbing out 802.1X authentication for wireless with a Cisco 2504 WLC along with a Windows Server 2012 r2 with AD, DHCP Server, DNS Server, Certificate Services, and NPS. I was able to make the different parts communicate and was able to successfully authenticate with an account I created on AD. Under my windows server event viewer, I received confirmation message: "Network Policy Server granted access to user." I received a valid IP address from the DHCP server. Computer is on the domain. Everything looks like it is working perfectly. I even checked the debug on my WLC looking for the mac address of my device but I received the "Processing Access-Accept mobile <MAC-ADDRESS>" message.
Here comes the problem. I created 2 WLAN’s to test. One was PSK while the other was 802.1X. They share the same interface on the WLC, so they have the exact same configurations. On my PSK everything works fine, I can browse Internet and ping devices within the network. On the 802.1X, I am able to ping the controller, but nothing else. Can’t ping gateway nor my dhcp server. Any thoughts?
    Best Regards,
    Sean

In your testing the device that connected with psk is the same device that connected to TLS?

I was in Aussie last month and dropped my iPod Touch (4th Gen) on the road. The screen was cracked on the top left-hand corner (where the wireless area is). No because it was physical damage

  • Connected to WRT54GsV4 but can't ping or browse

I have a very interesting problem I am working on for a friend. They have 3 computers in the house they are a vaio laptop with Vista, a macbook, and a HP desktop with Vista. The vaio laptop connects and surfs the internet fine, so does the macbook. The desktop which is wireless like the others will connect to the router, show it has local and internet connection but can not browse the internet or ping. I also can not access the router by going to the default gateway shown by IPCONFIG. IPCONFIG also shows it connected to the DNS and has an IP but it still can't get on the internet. I have tried just about everything. We have used a USB wireless adapter and 2 different wireless NICs all to no avail. One thing that I noticed is that on the vaio laptop it shows it connected to Linksys. On the desktop it shows Linksys as the SSID but when it connects it adds _SES_### which I thought was very odd. I have ran through and reset the tcpip and flushed the DNS all to no luck. We ran a system restore back to a week before when it was working, no luck someone please help!!!!!

I did not try to ping 4.2.2.2. I just know I can not ping comcasts dns servers. I have updated the firmware on the router and it did not work. The computer was able to access the internet until about a week ago, I don't understand what could have changed that I would now need a static DNS.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless card works, but configuration and software doesn't

    Hi,
I could manage to activate my Atheros wireless card using the madwifi drivers. I wanted to use knetworkmanager, but unfortunatly i doesn't recognize any of my network devices. I've read the other networkmanager threads, changed the daemons order, disabled the network daemon and the routing entry in rc.conf, but still (k)networkmanager doesn't know anything about my devices.
I tried to use knetworkmanager-svn from the AUR. Initially it doesn't work because the SVN URLs inside the PKGBUILD script a wrong, but even after I fixed them I couldn't compile the source, because there is no configure and no Makefile in the svn head. I'm really a noob when it comes to the linux build system, so I had to give it up.
Now I use wifi-radar. It is terribly slow to connect, but it works. However, when I disconnect with wifi-radar, then do 'ifconfig ath0 down && ifconfig eth0 up' the DNS requests fail. I checked /etc/resolv.conf and the default route (set to eth0), but they are right; the interface just doesn't use the name servers. The only way to get it working is to restart the laptop. How does Linux chose a "default interface"?
I'm not afraid of editing text files, but I'd like change networks fast and easy. I don't want to spend hours to adapt to a new access point... I'm really looking forward to the new wlan stack; maybe things will be getting easier then.

Okay, now KNetworkManager works (I forgot adding my user to the HAL group :] ).
There is still a problem - I know it's networkmanager related: At home I'm not using a DHCP server. KNetworkManager cannot handle static IP configuration. However, if I issue the command 'ifconfig ath0 192.168.0.12 subnet 255.255.255.0' while KNetworkManager is searching for a DHCP server I can even ping my gateway, so there is definitely a connection. Unfortunatly KNetworkManager closes this connections after a short period (dhcp timeout). Is there a quick'n'dirty workaround for this issue?
Another problem with KNetworkManager: When switching back to wired network, the DNS server is there :-) but the default gateway is not
    Thanks for suggestions..
    kei
//EDIT: In Debian there is a configuration file called /etc/network/interfaces. KNetworkManager uses the static IP information I enter there. However, when I modify /etc/rc.conf accordingly in ArchLinux, KNetworkManager does NOT use it.
//EDIT 2: After '/etc/rc.d/networkmanager restart' the static IP setting from /etc/rc.conf are used. The problem with the default gateway only occurs when the connection to one of the networks FAILS. After that failure the configuration is kind of messed up.
Altough it seems more like a dirty hack than a definite solution, I'm quite happy with the way it works now.
[CLOSED] <-- maybe I'm blind, but how can I change the topic to "[SOLVED] $Topic" ?

  • No errors with NAT or DHCP, but can't ping server or access internet

2 weeks ago my Xserve was positioned directly behind a modem and acted as the router to my small office - supplying DHCP, NAT, etc. Then, the Xserve lost it's connection to the internet. The Xserve was unable to pull an address from the modem (via DHCP) and troubleshooting the issue with my ISP resulted in getting my modem swapped.
My Xserve is still unable to pull an address via DHCP directly from the modem. So, I called apple support. The tech I spoke to was extremely helpful and instructed me to place the Xserve behind a router so it could use a static ip - without having to pay my ISP for one. So, I did as he instructed.
Regardless, since my Xserve originally lost connection to the internet I have been unable to get my Xserve to supply NAT to my internal network successfully. DHCP is working fine, the firewall isn't logging any refusals, NAT isn't returning errors. All internal network functions work, I just can't access the internet from any machine other than the server.
Here is the network port breakdown:
    Ethernet 1 (wan)
    ip: 192.168.1.2
    sub: 255.255.255.0
router: 192.168.1.1 (router supplying static ip)
    dns: 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220 (opendns)
    Ethernet 2 (lan)
    ip: 192.168.1.3
    sub: 255.255.255.0
    router: 192.168.1.3
    DHCP settings:
    start ip: 192.168.1.4
    end ip: 192.168.1.254
    sub: 255.255.255.0
    interface: en1
    router: 192.168.1.3
    Firewall:
    Allow all traffic from "any"
    NAT:
IP Forwarding and Network Address Translation
    External network interface: Ethernet 1
    NAT Port Mapping Protocol enabled.
Other notes: I can see the Xserve from any device on the network (in Finder running OS X) but I cannot ping it via the router's ip. (example: ping 192.168.1.3) 100% packet loss.
The Xserve does have access to the internet.
The Xserve leases an ip to the devices on the network, but cannot ping them using their leased ip address.
Initially, I was receiving the following error:
"xserve subnets: create failed, Invalid/missing 'net_address' property
So I modified bootpd.plist by adding:
    <key>net_address</key>
    <string>192.168.1.0</string>
I no longer receive the error and DHCP works properly.
Any help is thoroughly appreciated as this issue has set me back over a week in troubleshooting.

    Thanks again.
I'll try to be more clear about my current setup:
    Modem
    ->
    Router
DHCP enabled but supplying server with static ip of: 192.168.1.2 - hence my Ethernet 1 settings on my Xserve. The DHCP address the router supplies to other devices range between 192.168.1.101 - 192.168.1.150 (this is temporary). I'm using the Router as a temporary network connection for devices as I continue to setup the server. Once the server is completed, I will hook everyone up through the switch.
    ->
    Xserve
The Xserve receives a static IP from the router above (192.168.1.2) even though the router gives DHCP addresses to other devices. The Xserve then goes out Ethernet 2 to (which has also been assigned a static internal address: 192.168.1.3) a switch.
    ->
    Switch
The Switch definitely has DHCP disabled, and merely extends the network connection.
Right now, the Xserve is doing nothing other than attempting to supply an internet connection to devices attached to it. I performed a clean install after a day or two of troubleshooting.
I really want to be able to control content access as well as give certain devices priority over others using the Xserve. I want it to control... the network, in all aspects: DNS, Open Directory (Master), Firewall etc. Am I still able to control the network with the Xserve if it is hooked up side by side to the clients without reconfiguring my router to hop through the Xserve before going to the internet? If not, why not just use the Xserve as a middle man as I currently do?
What are the benefits of using it side by side to the clients? What are the drawbacks of my current setup? (Other than it not functioning)
