WRT54G - Troubleshooting Advice Needed

I have a WRT54G (version 2)that was working fine yesterday. I had my desktop & one laptop hardwired into the router. Laptop was VPN'd into work. All of a sudden I lost the connection, (cannot recall the error message). I shut down, restarted (PC, then modem, then router), no luck. Did this multiple times without success. I removed the router and I have internet connectivity, so I assume the problem is the router. I upgraded the firmware, no success. The lights are all flashing and I can get into the maintenance settings of the router. How can I tell if my router is working, or if it needs to be replaced?

I'm having a similar problem with the wrt54g v5. Just stopped broadcasting all of a sudden. I'm actually using a direct connect from my cable modem to get back online. If I go through the router, I get nothing. I can't even get onto the router config page.
Something I just noticed: The Cisco logo isn't blinking anymore. Been that way since the problem started. I've tried unplugging, using the reset button, and also pushing the Cisco button on the front. Does this thing just need a night off?Message Edited by ecbrow1 on 08-02-2006 05:16 PM

  • Desperate troubleshooting advice needed

I spilled juice on my desk (yes I know the lecture). It went UNDER the machine. I unplugged the mouse & keyboard, wen and got some towels & dried the desk off. Thne I pulled the machine up & wiped all under it & over the desk. I wiped everything down. Then I noticed the display was blank- but the little power light was on. after making sure everything was dry (I THOUGHT) I plugged the keyboard & mouse back in. Then, due to the blank display, I did a hard restart. It has been dead since.
I guess my question is, is this a case where some mopisture DID get in somewhere Y fry the power supply? Or could it be something else- worse or better?
Thanks so much to the community here for any advice.

Once electronics have got wet you need to leave them sufficient time to fully dry off. If the liquid is sticky it'll need to be carefully wiped out of any part of the casing/any parts it has got on to.
The power supply is mounted high up in the dome. In fact the lowest components are the SODIMM RAM and Airport (Extreme) card, above that is the logicboard which is immediately surrounded by the vent hole you can see on the base.
You can see that the logic board is mounted on a black tray but it is very close to the ring of vent holes. The blue mouse mat in this image is where the front of the iMac is.
I'd advise disconnecting the iMac from the mains power for some time. Then follow the instructions mhunter gives in this post (link) to clean down any sticky areas.
After that let us know what symptoms you get.

  • Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.
    Thank you very much

I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
    Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
    • You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
    • You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
    • You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

  • Had to have a rebuild of my laptop....advice needed!

Had to have a rebuild of my laptop....have now lost all my music from my itunes, but I can't transfer back on from my ipod. Also had to register my laptop (same) as another computers, so now no music showing as purchased, though I have. Also have hours of uploaded music from my own purchased, legitimate CDs, but won't transfer from ipod...it says it will erase. So very frustrated....thanks mr technician!    PLEASE  ....help, advice needed!

I believe that if you do a clean reinstall from your HD's recovery sector (D) or Recovery disks, the hard drive sector C is wiped clean. Everything goes, apps, data, address books, music, pix, viruses
    Is that what you did?

I am using InDesign CS5. I have a body of text which is ranged left with tabbed indents. My client now wants the copy to be justifed, keeping the tabbed indents. Help and advice needed please!

    Hi
That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.
    Hope that helps
    Paul
PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

  • Advice Needed - Should I just do a Clean Install?

I've got an older 17" iMac FP that I handed down to the kids (6 and 9). The mainly use Garageband and Pages. Since this was my original machine (before getting my new 20" iMac G5) I decided to leave my account on there, just for a backup. Lately they've been getting lots of "Program quit unexpectedly" on lots of apps, including Garageband, iTunes, TextEdit, and Marble Blast Gold. Things have gotten worse since the 10.4.7 upgrade. I just ran a "fix permissions" and "Verify Disk" all looked good. The machine is in good shape, lots of RAM and about 15G of disc space available.
So, what's my question... I've been thinking of just starting over; doing a clean install. This machine was originally upgraded from 10.2.8 directly to 10.4.x. I just think that maybe starting from a clean disk would help things out.
Some questions. What is the best way to backup the kids accounts? I have a FW drive connected to it, so I can back up stuff to it. I really don't want a "clone" just a decent backup. Also, is it a good idea to delete my and my wife's user accounts (I hear a disk image of each account is created). I could copy those over to the FW just as insurance. I've been moved over to the new G5 for about 3 months now, so I'm pretty sure I got everything over. But you know what happens, as soon as I wipe the old system I will discover I am missing something form the old machine.
What do you all suggest I do? I realize that even after wiping the drive I will probably end up with 10.4.7 after all is said and done. I just think that a clean system may be a good start.
    Thanks,
    Alfredo

    Hi, Alfredo.
    1. You wrote: " Lately they've been getting lots of "Program quit unexpectedly" on lots of apps..."See my "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch" FAQ for advice on troubleshooting this issue.
    2. I trust you've enabled Parental Controls, Simple Finder, etc. to keep the children from discarding system-related files? I presume they do not know the Admin password on that computer and their accounts are not set up as Admin, yes?
    3. You wrote: "What is the best way to backup the kids accounts? I have a FW drive connected to it, so I can back up stuff to it. I really don't want a "clone" just a decent backup."The advantage of duplicating (cloning) is that if you decide to reinstall Tiger from scratch, you can restore their accounts simply using the Migration Assistant from the clone on the FireWire drive after you've set up the an Admin account for yourself to manage their Mac. It's a little-known fact that you can use the Migration Assistant to migrate from an a duplicate of the startup disk of an "old" Mac on a FireWire drive vs. Target Disk mode.
That would also settle the question of saving a backup of your account and your wife's account on that computer for the time being. At some point you could startup from that clone, then use the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Deleting a user account" to delete those accounts from the clone and move the disk images for such to another drive on your new Mac. Note that if one of the accounts you are deleting from such is the only Admin account, you may want to first create another Admin account on the clone and use it to delete-and-preserve your account and that of your wife as you need to use an Admin account to remove accounts.
For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    4. If you're going to perform a full, fresh reinstall of Tiger on your children's computer, I also recommend — after cloning the drive and assuring you have good, bootable clone — to first "zero" the drive to remove any bad sectors that may have developed. See "Disk Utility 10.5 Help: Securely erasing disks." Select at least the "Zero Out Data" security option.
    5. FYI: If your children access the Internet, see my "Internet Safety for Children" FAQ for my advice on protecting your children on the Internet. This FAQ lists some Mac-based solutions, tips I have suggested in prior posts, and a list of links for additional information.
Note that some of the information above is from the "Moving to a New Mac" and "Zeroing Volumes" chapters of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.

  • Major advice needed with ATT / IPHONE / MICROCELL misleading/doesn't work

I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but I need some advice.
I've been battling ATT since thanksgiving week. I moved into a house (checked the coverage map before moving, and saw I was in the clear)
I have no service here. NOTHING. I had to use a verizon phone to call them, since Verizon actually works. They tell me they're working on it... weeks go by. A month, and another month of calling them and wondering what they could actually be doing to rectify my problem. Well about 2 weeks ago, ATT's RF engineer was hanging around my house for a couple of days. He told me they didn't even notify him about my problem until days before he arrived! So they were lying to me the whole time about trying to fix my lack of service. I kept asking them, "Can't you lend me a microcell until you fix what's wrong here?" They just said "No, you have to buy that and pay for it's service."
So it's now Feb 25th, and it's day II with my microcell. It shows 5 bars, but most of my calls are dropped, or I'm talking to someone that can't hear me. I emailed them last night asking if I could just be let go from this contract so I can move on and get back to business. They will waive my fee if I give them my Iphone 4 which I've owned for 11 months. Doesn't this seem a little strange??
I mentioned how I've lost many clients and a lot of money due to the fact that they think I'm ducking their calls because I don't receive them unless I drive 2 miles from where I live.
Again, today I talked with the service rep and they will not budge. Is there something in the contract that would help me out? Even the RF engineer/tech told me there is nothing they can do (other than putting up more towers!)
So I'm stuck in this nightmare with a phone that doesn't work, and paying for it. I still have a year on my contract and I just want out. The iphone was fun and all but I'm done with att and their ransom fees.
    Can someone help me?
Again...sorry if this isn't specifically an apple related post, but I don't know of another reputable place to ask advice

As you know, this is a user-ro-user iPhone tech support site. Neither Apple or AT&T participate here. The only way you can resolve your reception and service issues is through AT&T - no one here could possibly fix this. AT&T does provide free MicroCell service in some known poor coverage areas.
You can try some basic troubleshooting steps as described in the User Guide - Restart, Reset, Restore - but I doubt there is a problem in the phone itself.
IF you're not getting anywhere with AT&T, file a complaint with the FCC. Did the AT&T coverage map showed coverage in your area before you purchased the phone? You might want to get a lawyer to help.

  • Advice needed on purchase please!

OK so I plan on making the switch to Mac! Using an old PC desktop right now and plan on getting a portable. The Mac will be my main computer for everyday activities like email, word processing, internet, but I also want to record with it. I plan on getting an Apogee Duet to use with a couple condenser mics and record acoustic guitars and vocals. I'll start with Garageband and hopefully graduate to Logic Express or Logic one day. I don't play games but I do have lots of photos to import onto the Mac and would do general photo editing on them. I also want to take advantage of iMovie and iDVD with little video clips. So...is the Macbook (black one) sufficient or do I need the MBP for what I plan to do? I don't want to spend the extra money if I don't need to...
Second thing - every forum/website I have looked at all highlight the same problems with the MB and MBP - disc drives sticking, fan and overheating issues, faulty displays and so on. It's got me second guessing my purchase but I really want the Mac to record with, and I'm sick of Windows. I realize every computer is not perfect but from what I can tell there is an enormous amount of dissatisfaction with these issues. What's more is that people actually seem to acknowledge the problems but oddly many seem to accept them just because it's an Apple. I really don't want to shell out so much money to experience a major problem after a few weeks of use. I live in a rural area and taking it to a store is not really doable for me.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This is a troubleshooting forum. Therefore the majority of the issues you see here are due to the rare lemon, and people still facing a learning curve with computers not knowing what they are doing which may create more issues than solve them. Most people with Macs are very satisfied and don't see these issues. People are too quick to blame the computer or the operating system when the issue is they are doing repairs to systems that otherwise are not broken and then breaking them in the process. If they had just followed some simple rules issues like these would not happen.
So the best thing to do when migrating you to the Mac is to get you started on the right step. If you want to have room to upgrade to Logic Pro a MacBook Pro is probably wiser than a MacBook. You'll have more expansion room in terms of peripherals. The lack of an Express/34 port and a Firewire 800 port really weaken the strength of a simple MacBook when it comes to people in the audio and video editing industry. It is nice to be able to add drives to different buses so editing is faster. Express/34 SATA/II cards are even faster than USB or Firewire when adding an external hard drive.
In the beginning a MacBook is not a bad option, but given where you want to go, don't cheat yourself by only getting a MacBook.

  • Advice needed on whether to upgrade or not...

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade my operating system from Mac OS X v.10.2.8 but am worried that some applications may not work if I do. I am using Adobe Photoshop 7, Microsoft Office X, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX... I haven't upgraded the OS yet because I'm not technically knowledgeable and it's all a bit over my head! One of the main reasons that I am considering upgrading is that I can't get certain podcasts because I can't get itunes u, because I can't upgrade my itunes because I need OS X v.3 or higher. And I have also noticed that Software Update hasn't found any updates since Jan. 2007 and I'm wondering if this is because there aren't any more updates available for OS X v.10.2.8 because it is old? I would be very grateful for any information or advice. Thanks in advance!

At this point with all of the current complaints of the OS X 10.5 release you might want to wait. Not only are there some issues with 3rd party apps, but currently there are enough issues with Leopard itself that I would suggest holding off until they fix most of the problems. I am finding it hard to troubleshoot if the problem is with the application or with Leopard itself. I figure that since Leopard can't even view JPEG files properly as thumbnails, in cover flow, or even in Preview properly, who knows what else is wrong with it right now.

  • Multiple device syncing advice needed and appreciated.

Hey everyone, happy holidays to everyone
I need some advice from you Apple lovers out there if you can spend some time replying.  Thanks alot in advanced
    My devices and current status
13" Macbook Pro with 8gig RAM with lion OS - Mosty used for word processing, DJing, low Internet usage now that i have Ipad, photo management, DVD ripping etc etc - i use this as my main device to organise emails and i purchase most apps, music and films on this device too
Ipad2 - Mostly for media content, web browsing, Youtube, playing games, FB, watching films. I use this device for fun not functionality or work related things
Iphone 4 - Usual phone usage, I use my phone as my main device for iCal, contacts, checking emails/messages on the move
2GB time capsule - brand new in the box as yet unused
Generally speaking i get confused or change my mind frequently about what to sync to which device, i started off using icloud but then things got confusing and i had things real messed up, multiple same contacts, apps on differnet device, differnet music on all 3 devices so now for the moment i think of my Macbook as the main device with both my iphone and ipad backed up to the Macbook. I then back up all of this on a regular 500g external Hard Drive.
So my questions are as follows
    1. Can and should i use icloud to back up my devices and if so how should i do this effectivly
    2. What syncing procedure would suit me best
    3. How should i integrate Timecapsule to my devices
Any other suggestions would really be apreciated
    Thanks again

The second part puzzles me - excuse me (but i honestly don't know) do both units give off a wifi signal of roughly equal 'amounts'?
Yes. Since both are connected by "Ethernet" each base station is its own wireless network and you have a few options on how best to configure them.
One of those options is to give both wireless networks the same Network Name (or SSID) so that you can, for example, "walk" a laptop from one to the other and stay connected. This is known as a roaming network.
If this is something that you don't desire or have a requirement for, then leaving them as two separate wireless networks would work just as well.
So what i am asking - i guess - is can i increase the distance the wifi signal reaches of the second unit (the time capsule - that is wired to the airport extreme)
To extend the wireless range of the Time Capsule (TC) you would need another 802.11n AirPort, like the AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). This should get a stronger signal out to the garden. Of course, it would really depend on the distance from the TC to where you would like to place the AXn to get the best results.
Let me know if you need help configuring the base stations.

  • I have constant K8N Neo2 problems advice needed. (long) Update

I need some advice on what my problem might be and if I need to RMA the motherboard or power supply.
I have a new Athlon 64 3500+ processor, MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum BIOS v1.3 motherboard, with 2 512MB DIMMs of Corsair Value Select Memory. I have had and am still having a series of crashes and lock-ups I will list below. FULL SYSTEM SPECS BELOW AT BOTTOM.
I initially installed the motherboard with a SINGLE 120GB hard drive from the old machine and the installed the memory in memory slots 1 & 2 to try dual channel memory mode. I then formatted the C partition and did a clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, installed the MSI drivers on the installation CD that came with the motherboard (Nvidia nForce3 Version 5.03 System Drivers, Realtek gigabit ethernet driver, Realtek AC97 audio driver) & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I then got my first blue screen "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash, I ignored this crash and rebooted. I shortly got a black screen crash which I also ignored.
I then installed a new 200GB hard drive and a old 120GB so I could transfer the data from the old 120GB to the new 200GB drive. The data transfer went fine. As I was preparing to install some applications I then got my second blue screen "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash. Suspecting the Corsair Value Select Memory could not handle dual channel I ran Memtest-86 for 2 passes and got NO errors with the memory in dual channel mode, so I left it.
With my data backed up on the 200GB new drive I removed the new 200GB and the second 120GB hard did another clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, this time with Nvidia’s nForce3 Version 5.10 system drivers, the Realtek gigabit ethernet driver and Realtek AC97 audio driver  from the motherboard installation CD & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I downloaded the latest version of Core Center and installed it and got it working. CPU temperatures were showing a low of around 29C, average of about 44C, and spikes at full loads of about 55-57C. I then ran Ghost to back up the boot partition. I installed all my applications, reinstalled the 200GB and 120 GB hard drives moved some data around with no crashes.
I then installed Rome Total War and played for about 2 hours and had one black screen crash after the reboot played for 4 more hours with no problems so I shut down and went to bed.
In the morning I got up started the computer let it run for awhile the CPU temperatures were in the low 30Cs to low 40Cs I tried to copy some files from the D partition to desktop and the screen freezes I waited about 5 min. with no change and no drive light activity so I hit the reset button. Upon reboot I got a ‘no system disk found” error, I went into the BIOS and checked the drive set-ups and boot priority, everything was correct. I tried for a half hour to get the system to boot with on luck. I used the Ghost to restore the partition image I had made earlier and still no boot. I finally decided to reinstall XP again put in the installation CD and when I got to the screen where you decide where to install Windows I changed my mind quit and bingo the machine boots into the restored Ghost partition???? I started to reinstall my applications got one more blue screen"MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash and another screen freeze that I had to reset.
So I decided to start from real scratch I removed the new 200GB and the second 120GB hard drive ran Killdisk on the boot drive, made a new clean 20GB C partition and did another clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, this time with Nvidia’s nForce3 Version 5.10 system drivers, the Realtek gigabit ethernet driver and Realtek AC97 audio driver from the motherboard installation CD & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I installed the latest version of Core Center and installed it and got it working. CPU temps were as before.
I tested the memory with Memtest-86 again 2 passes no errors. Just in case I then moved one of the memory DIMMs to memory slot 3 out of dual channel mode and to a slower speed and ran Memtest-86 for about 20 hours with 21 passes with no memory errors, so I think memory can be ruled out as the problem.
Next I installed my applications I got one screen freeze that I had to reset. I reinstalled the other 200GB and 120GB hard drives. After I got all my applications install and Ghosted the boot partition. I have had one more one screen freeze that I had to reset.
I have a problem I simply cannot figure out. The memory is obliviously fine. While I have seen CPU temperatures spikes as high as 57C the CPU temps as reported by Core Center averages in the high 30Cs or low 40Cs and most of crashes/lock-ups don’t seem to occur during high CPU load/temp. The power supply might be a little light for the system but many of the crashes have occurred with only one hard drive in the system. The fact after one for the lock-ups the system would not boot for awhile and then magically just booted gives me concern there might be a motherboard problem.
Any solution ideas would be appreciated. Should I RMA the power supply, the motherboard, or both.
