Iweb, rapidweaver, freeway....

I've been using iWeb but Apple isn't really "supporting" it any more, there are no updates and although it is relatively easy to use I don't like some of it.  I'd like to make a gallery for my photography site and I don't like the way iweb handles it.  I'd like to see a strip at the bottom or somehow be able to pick the pictues you see and a slideshow.. I just want a little more control and some options.
Has anyone used either Rapidweaver or Freeway Pro and if so what do you think?
Thanks,
Susan

I'd like to find out what people in this discussion are using now? Is that permitted?
(EG: I'm 'bumping' this thread not because I'm a troll or anything, but because members here sounded like they were at the beginning of a journey and I'd like to hear how that went and what they are doing now).
These are the alternatives to iWeb that tempt me.
Freeway Pro

Rapidweaver
http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/overview/
Sandvox
http://www.karelia.com/sandvox/
or Flux?
http://www.theescapers.com/flux/
And of course Adobe Muse which looks AWESOME and would be the one I would buy automatically, but for the fact that it is subscription based. That's just rude. It could end up really expensive over the long term. I don't like being charged for software when it might just sit there for a year without being used. I like owning it outright, just in case I need it again in the next 5 years (or when this computer reaches end of life...)

  • IWeb, rapidweaver & .mac question

Given that I just cannot update my website nor publish to a folder (been trying since 9th Jan & just get the same unknown error message and nothing in these forums has addressed the problem) I'm considering re-doing my site with rapidweaver (I prefer iWeb, but if just doesn't work?).
Does anyone know if I publish to my .Mac account the new site will have the same URL? I really just use the site to publish my podcasts and I'm trying to avoid the hassle of having to set up a new feed etc. Also I have my own URL which is pointed to my .Mac account. Any ideas anyone? Or any suggestions on how I can fix iWeb?

As far as I know RW still publishes the pages in the Sites (HomePage) folder. You can enter a pathname to the correct location.
To publish the page to the iWeb folder, or any other location, you have to export the site.
A nice feature of RW is that you can export changes only, instead of the whole Site.

  • IWeb, rapidweaver & .mac account question

It has been impossible for me to to update my webpage since the beginning of January (I managed to pull some files from a folder into iDisk but tried again today but it hasn't worked.) I have been thinking about building a new site in RapidWeaver and uploading it to my .Mac address. Will this erase my current site? I ask because iWeb is in the url title http://web.mac.com/chrispinchen/iWeb/slow_Spain/Blank.html
and I guess that if I upload from RW it would create a different url?

  • IWeb/Rapidweaver

Hey guys, I've been fooling around with Rapidweaver lately as I have a couple of other sites that I maintain for others & was thinking that I might use it to keep my band's site up to date as well. We're hosted on me.com & I was wondering if I could somehow get some of the functions of iWeb to work in Rapidweaver. Specifically the hit counter, the mirror image effect on images & the image functions in the blog page. I'd also like to know if anyone at Apple knows if there are any plans to upgrade iWeb so that it's more functional & diverse for those of us who have multiple domains to manage but prefer the simplicity of iWeb & one touch publishing. I'd be willing to pay for a more robust version of iWeb & I'm quite certain that I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
    Peace - J
PS: sorry if this is a little off topic in the sense that it pertains to RW but I figured this would be the best place to ask! :0)

    Jason ~ Re hit counter:
"There is not a RapidWeaver plugin for this, but you could use the free Statcounter service to place a counter on your website. They provide the code and it’s pretty simple to plugin to your website."
Re mirror image effect: One way (of many) would be to add it outside of RapidWeaver via Picturesque.

As mentioned above, publishing appears to be simpler in iWeb '09 — available later this month...
"Easily manage multiple websites and publish one site at a time using MobileMe or FTP. Use built-in FTP publishing with virtually any web-hosting service."
    Read more here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/#manage
And this "iWeb '09 First Impressions" article says:
"...true support for publishing multiple sites to multiple servers. iWeb '09 is still a library-based application, where each site gets its own sub-heading in iWeb's left sidebar. But clicking on a site's heading reveals publish settings for that particular site, so you can publish two different sites to MobileMe and FTP, or even to two separate MobileMe accounts."

  • IWeb, RapidWeaver, or GoLiveCS2?

If I ugrade to iLife06 from 05, I'll get iWeb, right?
Is RapidWeaver worth the extra money?
As an academic, I can get GoLiveCS2 from www.campustech.com for $75. This is a $399 retail program, and Adobe says it is "easy to use". Is this true? Will I get more than iWeb or RapidWeaver?
All I want is to publish family albums and videos, and produce an web newsletter for a club, but no e-commerce.

    Yes.

Not if you have already purchase iLife with iWeb.

The "easy to use" is all relative. GoLive is not as easy as RapidWeaver or (from what I can tell from Job's keynote) iWeb. It's in fact an application largely designed for professional web designers. For those with no experience making websites, it can be difficult to use. $75 is a great price for a product like that and it is certainly considerably more powerful than iWeb and RapidWeaver; but for your purposes, it seems overkill.

  • IWeb - looking for replacements for 'blog' & 'photos'

With a deep Sigh..., I am finally facing up to the fact that I must move my iWeb Websites to another hosting sight and deal with the loss of the intergrated blog & photo pages that come with iWeb.  I kept hoping for a miracle but now I must get on with it.  I would be grateful for advice from those who have dealt with this issue already.
My biggest concern is finding suitable replacements for the blog and photo galleries that can be embedded into iWeb having a matching 'look and feel'.
I have developed many robust (well of 50) websites with iWeb and they are active websites.   The websites have:
Custom layouts (i.e. not using the suppled defalut template)
Blog pages (used as 'News' entries)
    Photo pages
    iMovie
    HTML Snipits
Many have been designed for use with charity events and recieve quite a bit of traffic (see stats below) before and during the event.
As for the hosting - we will use GoDaddy or other Domain Provide with Hosting services.   We have already moved some of the more less complicated websites over.
I love iWeb (I know it has it's faults and I have probably pushed it to it's limits but it has handled it well).  I have tried looking at other products like Rapidweaver & Freeway Pro (Dreamweaver would be out of the question for me as I'm not a programmer - I can deal with some basic html code for snippets and such - but that's my limit).  My partner has begun looking at Wordpress.  However, the biggest drawback from what I've seen from these other products is that I can't duplicate the freedom and ease of designing a template/layout the way I want it.  I have tried to duplicate a website I have done in iWeb and I simply can't do it with these other products (at least without a great deal of work - if at all).
So, I wish to continue using iWeb for the main website desgin but desparately need to find good replacements for the blog and photo galleries to move over my existing websites.
    Please HELP!
This is my 1st time up on the forums so I do apologise if this has been dealt with before.  In my searches - I just haven't really found an answer which is why I'm submitting this question.
    Many thanks, MichelleSC
P.S. I have been an Apple user since Apple began and have always raved about their products.   This is the 1st time I have been frustration with Apple.  I really wish they would continue to develop iWeb and keep Mobileme.

Do you have visitors post comments to your blog or it is one the only includes your entries?  If it's the atter then you can continue to use the iWeb blog. If you currently have visitors comment on the entires you will have to move to a new blogging system, one of those suggested by Ethmoid and Jeff.
As for photo albums I've just run across a new site called ZangZig which offers albums similar to MobileMe galleries with most of it's features plus one that MMe didn't have.  The capability of selling your photos.
One convenient feature of it is that it can move/copy photos from your existing MMe galleries as well as your iPhoto library and other sources:
As for for iWeb can do after MMe is gone read the following:
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.  There's a link in the tutorial to download the file that one needs to be edited and replaced in existing slideshows and in the iWeb application for future slideshows. Once replaced in the application it's back to life as usual for iWeb.

  • IWeb vs. competitors: suggestion?

Please, a suggestion for an absolute source code dummy and DOS (HTML, JAVA, UNIX, ...) hater:
Should I start creating webpages (for semi-professional use) with iWeb or Freeway Express / RapidWeaver / ... ?
I have read the controversy about iWeb's awful code output, but I am an absolute code illiterate and I'm not willing to learn it. I just want to handle this app like, say, InDesign - and I want the result to look good with every major browser.
    Thanks a lot!

  • I web vs  upgrade to Rapidweaver,WP etc..

I like I web[no html] it has nice tools, with very tasteful  look if you know how to squeeze it.
    I have comtemplated upgrading to Rapidweaver,Freeway,Sandvox and......Wordpress.
Which are not complicated like Dreamweaver, but can maybe do more than I web?????
I have simple web site with videos[need to know how to embed them without junk backround?] and happy, except I feel I am missing  a more advanced world.
Should I upgrade or live in my simple bubble world???
How do these other programs differ from I web, they have more add ons,????
    Jay

RapidWeaver and Sandvox don't really offer a lot more than iWeb does - template based an no import facilities.
You could take a look at Freeway.
WordPress would be fine, but if you want to use WordPress.org, then you'll need to purchase a hosting account and it needs to be installed on your server with a database - most hosts that offer it offer an easy one click installation - WordPress is one of the Content Management Systems (CMS's) along with others such as Drupal and Joomla that can be updated online and from any Mac or PC, but you don't have as much control.
DreamWeaver is very expensive and comes with a massive learning curve - probably too much of a leap from iWeb especially if you don't know anything about html or css and are not prepared to learn.
Try taking a look at Flux 3 - you can download a free trial of this.  It is a half way house and can offer more than Rapidweaver, Sandvox or Freeway, but it is not as complex or expensive as Dreamweaver, but still has import facilities.

  • IWeb versus Freway

I'm working on completely redesigning my web site. So far I actually used MS Word to generate HTML. I'm trying out iWeb, but find that maybe it has too many limitations. For example, you cannot change the format of the table of contents, or create drop-down menus, or have a link to another part of a page (a bookmark?). Is it worth spending the extra money and buy Freeway Express? Does anybody have an opinion about that?

I will answer my own question if anyone might be interested. I have played around with iWeb and Freeway (Express), and here is a mini comparison. Freeway is an excellent program. It's very easy to make advanced contents (drop down menus etc etc.). If you want to do that kind of things in iWeb it seems you have to do all kind of tricks. However, generating and maintaining a simple website based on contents from other programs is much easier in iWeb. For example, you can just copy and paste text from other applications with formating (mostly) intact. In Freeway you essentially have to use unformatted text. Applying HTML formatting in Freeway is not easy either. There are many other features (e.g., the ingenious Apple method of aligning objects) in iWeb that makes making a simple web site easy.
To me, being able to easily publish text that changes often is most important, and I therefore decided to stay with iWeb. I just wish there was an upgrade path, i.e., like iPhoto/Aperture iMovie/final cut, so that if you run into the limitations of iWeb, there would be a way to go to a more advanced program without starting all over.

  • Can I change template?

I am trying to decide on the tool for a blog, and it's between iWeb, RapidWeaver and Freeway 4 Pro. It seems RapidWeaver is the best and most popular but iWeb has easily the best templates. The thing is can I change the template used at a later date?
Also with blog comments using iWeb, can I get notifications of any comments and can I moderate comments?
    Thanks for your help.

I don't use blogs but an trying to recall what I've read in this forum. As I recall if you change the template you may lose all the entries.

  • What is an easy web-page creation program for use with MacBook Pro?

Can anyone suggest an easy web-page creation program for use with MacBook Pro?  I have used FrontPage with my PC, but am changing to a MacBook Pro.

It largely depends on your skill level. Do you want to write web page code, or do you want to just design something and have it turn into a web page automatically?
If you are more of a designer, try these:
    RapidWeaver
    Freeway Pro
    Muse
If you want to write web page code, try these:
    Coda
    BBEdit
    Dreamweaver
If you really don't want to write the code and want the best experience for your viewers, and you want to spend the least amount of time on it, my recommendation is:
    No program at all.
Instead, sign up with a web site company like:
WordPress.com (hosted by them) or WordPress.org (hosted on your server)
    Squarespace
    Wix
The reason is that these companies have fully operational, nicely designed web site templates that you just fill in with your words and pictures, and they are ready to go. They also give you these benefits:
Already designed to the latest web standards
    Already designed to resist hackers
Already designed to work on all browsers
Already designed to automatically adjust the page for readability on desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone screen sizes
    Already designed for accessibility
Already designed for Search Engine Optimization so that your page will be found on Google
Already designed with social media links built in if you want
It is not like the old days where you build a site in Front Page and you assume it will only be seen on a desktop computer. If you build it yourself with a web page program, do you have the knowledge to make a site that works on all of the different web browsers and mobile devices, and is friendly to search engines and social media? If you don't have those skills, working with a website company can be a lot better, faster, and more reliable than trying to hammer all of that out yourself using code in some app.

I'm looking for programs with similar function as iWeb - RapidWeaver, Sandvox etc. - but NEVER I see better program - iWeb is still my favorite, is nice design concept, maximum intuitive, and very user friendly Thank for your oppinion! Here are some tips I've gathered from this forum on how to make sites more compatible with IE.
1 - do not use and frames or borders, etc. around photos.
    2 - don't use any reflections.
3 - create your own navigation bar with linked text* and turn of the iWeb Navigation bar. That's because the nav bar is all png based.
*Put your linked text directly under the Navigation bar. Then turn off the nav bar in the Inspector window. The nav bar will disappear and the linked text will move up to the top of the page as seen in this screenshot.
4 - use only the web safe fonts from the Font pane.
5 - do not use drop shadow on fonts.
6 - turn off smart quotes
7 - if you add a jpg to a page don't resize it in iWeb as that will cause it to be converted to png. Resize it to what you need before adding to the page..
The above will reduce the number and size of files associated with a web page quite a bit. Photos with fancy frames and reflections can generate a thumbnail png of around 110KB whereas the plain version will be a jpg of only 28KB. Although it doesn't sound like a lot, it will speed up loading of the page and be more darkside (i.e. PC) friendly.
Run a test with a test site and publish to a folder. Then follow the hints above and publish to another folder and compare folders.
Also there's a site, netrenderer that you can paste your site's url into an entry field and it will display how the various versions of IE will display your site. I don't know how accurate it is but may give you an idea of where problems areas are.

  • Does Pages create newsletters to be emailed?

    Hello,
I'm just learning pages, and see that they have some nice newsletter templates. I would like to create a newsletter that I can e-mail to a list.
Can pages do this? If so, do I send it in html format, or open it to see the html? I'm not sure how to do this, or if it can even be done.
    Thank you,
    Kirstyn Sierra

The easiest way - well, without spending any extra money - to create layout-heavy emails is this:
    1. Create the email in a web page app (iWeb, Rapidweaver or whatever). Keep it simple though as animations probably won't work in other people's email clients and videos etc. will make it a huge download.
    2. Publish the page a file on your desktop.
    3. Use Safari to open the index.html file
    4. In the File menu in Safari, choose 'Mail Contents of this page', or press cmd-i
    5. Safari slaps the webpage into an otherwise blank email. Voila.

  • Creating evite from Pages

Is there a way to create an e-vite from a Pages document so that it shows up when you open your e-mail or does this have to be done in html or another program?

    Mari,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Pages can export to PDF which some email browsers will display in the body of the email -- but many won't. I think Pages is probably the wrong program to use to do what you want. Consider iWeb or Freeway to get HTML.

  • How to publish a website created in Freeway in mobileme-iWeb

I created my website in Freeway, already uploaded it into mobileme, I don't know how to proceed from there. My domain name is already registered. I couldn't find any help in iWeb or mobileme. I'd appreciate it if someone could help me, thanks!

You publish to MobileMe. With or without a domainname.
The webpages should be in the iDisk > Web > Site folder.
To use your domainname, follow the instructions in your MobileMe account where you setup Personal Domain:
