Voice Over in FCPX makes no sound

I recorded a Voice Over in FCPX- and I can see the waveform but it makes no sound.  It moves the meters but makes no sound.  There is other sound playing.  What's up with that? any angels?

Just to be sure, select the audio clip and press 'V' (this activates or deactivates a clip). Does this make any difference?
Otherwise, I suggest you try trashing your preferences.
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs first, then if trashing makes no difference, you can restore all your settings.
If you trash them and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then if they get corrupted you can ditch the bad prefs and restore from your (Digital Rebellion) backup.
Can't guarantee it, but it's worth a try.

Also a sound from a banner is like STICK in to my browser, everytime i enter the same website were a saw a banner it plays that sound, even when that banner is no longer there 1 year ago.

    Ty!!

    HI,
    Try Safari maintenance.
First, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Empty Cache.
Next, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safri/Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Open System Preferences/Sound and select "Sound Effects". Deselect where you see:
Play user interface sound effects and see if that makes a difference.
Open System Preferences/Universal Access and select the Seeing tab.
Make sure Voice Over is not selected.

  • FCPX Makes Audio Sound "Tinny"

I have an absolutely bizarre problem: FCPX seems to be applying a "tin" sound to my audio file. Please find two audio samples at these links. The FCPX version is the clip in my event browser, with no effects or Audio Enhancements applied. The second is the clip in the Finder, to which the Event Browser is linking.
    FCPX version: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13895316/FCPXversion.m4a
    Original version: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13895316/Original.m4a
Once I apply an EQ to the FCPX version, the tin sound is impossible to ignore. I tried relinking, to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas for how to fix this?

Problem solved! For some reason, "Preserve Pitch" got selected in the retime editor. I had not even applied a speed change (See screenshot below). Pressing "Reset Speed" disables "Preserve Pitch", and the audio clip sounds normal again.
    Must be a bug...

  • Audio input is gone. What plug/adapter do I need to plug in a rode mic for fcpx voice overs? Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi,
First time user.... Bare with me.
My old imac had an audio input and I could simply plug in my rode mic and perform voice overs etc.... Now the new imac has no audio input.
I gather I need an adapter, but am I really stuck buying the iRig Pro at $219? Will this even work for voice overs in FCPX or is there a much cheaper and cheerful option for this problem that apple could have avoided in the first place...
Any advice will be welcomed and appreciated.

    Thanks Very much A Brody!
None of the research I did came up with this option. Really appreciate it.

  • How to do voice over in 10.0.6 ?

    Hi there,
I remember a couple of years ago when I was using Windows Movie Maker, I bought a usb mic Audio Technica ATR2020 to do some voice over.
I still have the mic with me.
But I cannot figure out how do I a voice over in FCPX.
    Any tips ?
    Thanks

Thanks Ben for the great link.
I know the voice over after recording appeared in the Events. But can I ask, where is it stored actually. I mean, if say I am satisfied after 5 takes, only the take number 5 is useful to me. How do I delete of the earlier 4 takes from my computer completely ?
    Thanks

  • Ideal settings for warm, high quality voice over?

Are there ideal settings to get a high quality voice over? I am using a good Samson mic, but need guidance with the settings? I don't suppose there is an existing preset that could be applied for this--I imagine I'll have to create one.
    Thanks.

There are plent of presets that will add ambience to the voice over, but to make it "warm" and not sound "recorded" isn't easy if at all possible using the presets in SB.
The best solution is to make sure the voice track is recorded at as close to "studio quality" as you can get before adding it.
"Egg crate" foam, carpet, fiberglass, mic baffling, all help to minimize background noise and that slight echo that can turn what would otherwise be a really good voice over into an amateurish sounding affair.

  • Help with voice-over on Ipod nano

I'm totally blind and am using the 60g Ipod Nano with voice-over inabled. I am finding though even though the voice speaks the names of the menus, ie music, albums etc it doesn't speak the names of my albums or songs or tracks. What have I done wrong? I've tried connecting and leaving it to see if any voice tags are made, but nothing has happened. Any help would be welcome, it's driving me mad Many thanks from Lori.

    Try resetting your iPod.
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
Since you are totally blind, perhaps some one can double check your voice over settings to make sure everything is updated.

  • Voice over monitor for FCPX sounds awful

I'm trying to voice over a project right now and the monitor for the input out from FCPX sounds like it has an echo and makes your voice sound higher pitched. Is there any one else out there having the same problem? Its really annoying and my VO talent doesn't want to listen to his voice sounding like that for an hour and a half.

First, you don't really have to monitor yourself while recording.  I never do.  Second, you have to use headphones, or your mic will pick up the audio monitors and feedback.  Here are three articles to help out.

  • Add soundfiles (voice over) to existing project – how do I make the sound optional for the participant to listen to?

Hi! I´d like to import soundfiles to an existing project. This is what I´m trying to do: I´d like to have a symbol on each page with a clickbox on top. When (if) the participant wants to listen to the voice over, he/she can click on the symbol and the voice is activated. Right now, the sound file is activated directly when I open the slide. Can anyone give me some advise? Kind regards, Gunilla

It helps if you mention the version you are using. Because you talk about 'click box on top of a symbol' you probably use an older version. Since shapes appeared, that can be used as buttons and can be filled with any image or text, this is no longer necessary: Turn an Image into a Button - Captivate blog
In that case you'll need to replace the slide audio (you see it on the Timeline) by object audio. Audio files can be linked to any objects, and they'll start to play when the object gets visible. First approach would be by creating an audio object. This blog post offers some details: Audio Objects: Control them! - Captivate blog
Second approach: use the command 'Play Audio' triggered by the shape button (or click box). I'd recommend strongly not to use this command as a simple action, unless you are happy with the playhead advancing at the same time: Why choose Standard over Simple action? - Captivate blog  Use a standard advanced action instead. If you were on Captivate 7 or 8 I would advise to use a shared action.
I hope you do have that command, think it appeared with CP6. It has the advantage that when another button is clicked that plays another audio clip, the first one will stop automatically. If you have to use an audio object, you'll have to hide the object to have the audio stopped.

  • FCPX has no audio tracks so how to add effects on voice over?

I imported my voice over track. Then, I proceeded to chop it up and move it to the appropiate points in the time line. However, now there are no "tracks" how can I EQ the whole thing in one go? All the individual choped up clips moved up and down willy-nilly into different empty areas of the time line.
    Cheers
    Waddo

I do VO work all the time, daily.  Record it, make that a Connected Timeline (if it is not in the Primary Timeline already), then chop it up as you normally do, and then align it with the audio first.  Then make it all a Compound Clip.  Apply the EQ or whatever sweetening you need to the Compound Clip.

  • Voice over sounds like coming from a toilet paper tube

OK, I was born in a poverty stricken area of Pennsylvania, and we used toilet paper tubes for toys.
More self-disclosure than you wanted, but during an interview, the questions did not come out very clear. I used the voice over tool, and the difference between the sound and the voice over is very noticeable. The voice over sounds "tinny" and distant.
I copied the sound tracks to make it louder and played with the pan and the volume, but to no avail.
    Any suggestions?
    Hank Kearns

I am using a Logitech USB mic. Perhaps that is
    my problem to.
OUCH! this made me wince in sympathy pains. what you need for a decent voiceover - i do this in my edit room - are some sound blankets on the floor, a sennheiser me66 in the mic stand pointing down, above and in front of he talent, going into your mixer and then into your vtr or your mac. personally, i go into my vtr and use tape so i can turn off the computers.
that usb mic isn't gonna cut it!

  • Voice Over sounds muffled

I have Voice Over enabled on my 4th generation iPod Shuffle. I sometimes press the button on the Suffle to hear the track title and artist currently playing.
But the Voice Over voice sounds very muffled to me, and difficult to understand. It's like a woman with a bad chest cold trying to talk through a thick blanket.
Anyone else notice this? Is it normal?

Does music sound normal?  Make sure the headphones plug is fully inserted into the jack.  Also, as a test, try a different set of headphones (any type), and use VoiceOver to see of there is any difference.
If that does not help, you may want to do a Restore in the shuffle in iTunes.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.
Re-sync the shuffle, set up VoiceOver, and try using VoiceOver again.

  • How to set up the default voice over sounds exactly like the Alex voice?

    Hi,
Anyone know how can I find out the exactly settings of the New System Voice Over Sound that shipped with the v10.5 Leopard call Alex?
When I first opened the Voice Over set up windows, a voice called Alex greeting me and said it is the new voice of 10.5, it sounds very natural with the exactly right rate, pitch and volume.
But when I later try to go into the voice over set up menu to get the exactly sound as my default setting, I can't reproduce the same sound quality... can anyone know how to fix this?
    thanks in advance!!

I did. Their technical team knows very little about iPhones, and tried to refer me to the local Israeli dealer (iDigital) which doesn't support iphones at all, so I'm kind of stuck.
I found a few posts on the Interenet talking about using *5005*86 to program the iPhone's modem through them, but I couldn't figure what to type exactly to make it work...

  • Breathing sounds in a voice over

    Hi,
I have recorded some voice over clips to add to videos for my website. The only problem is that you can hear when I take a breath which is not that great for a voice over. Does anyone have any idea how I can remove or reduce those sounds?
    Thanks,
    Kerri

You can reduce breaths most easily during the recording process.  Turn your head before taking a breath or practice controlled breathing.
Once you have breaths recorded, there are a few means of handling them.  You could locate each one, select it in the editor, and use the on-screen volume control to reduce it.  Don't reduce it too much, or it will sound VERY unnatural.  You might want to locate a slice of your recording with no speaking or breathing - just the ambient room tone - and paste this in over the breaths.
If there are a LOT of breaths, this may take a long time.  In this case, and if the breaths are quieter than the rest of your recording, you could use the Dynamics effect to reduce the levels of audio that falls below a certain threshhold.  If you click Effects > Advanced > Dynamics  you can open the effect settings and concentrate on the Gate/Expander section.  Make a selection around a breath so you hear normal speaking and a breath, then enable Looped playback.  (This makes it easier to hear how your adjustments will affect the breaths and the other audio.)  press play, and begin adjusting the Attack, Release, Ratio and Threshhold settings.  Threshhold determines what decibel level triggers the adjustments - you can get an approximate value by selecting a breath in the waveform and noting where the height of the waveform falls with respect to the vertical dB ruler to the right of the waveform.  If it looks like it's under -20dB, for example, you can set your threshhold around -20dB.  Anything louder than this will not be affected by these changes.  The Ratio parameter adjusts how much the affected audio - the breaths - will be reduced.  Attack and Release determine how much time will be spent easing into this adjustment.  Too fast and it will sound like someone is flipping a switch.  Too slow, and it might not have a chance to start adjusting before the louder audio resumes.  Since a breath might be anywhere from 1/4 to a full second in length, try starting around 30ms for each and adjust until it sounds right.
While it's certainly possible to get great results after editing, there is nothing like an ounce of prevention and getting a great recording up front.
    Good luck!
