WRT160N Download Speed Degrading Drastically

I have a 30Mbps download speed when plugged directly into my modem.
When I go from modem to router and then directly plugged into computer (using ethernet) it degrades to 15 Mbps.
When I swith to wireless and I step about 20 feet from router my speed degrades down to 0.57 Mbps with full signal strength.
My version of firmware is 1.2.11. Here are my settings:
MTU = 50
Beacon = 50
Fragment Threshold = 2304
RTS = 2304
Radio Band = 20 GHZ channel
Standard Channel = set to 11
Network mode is mixed.
Security is a WPA2 / AES
What's wrong with this router that my download speed is degrading so much?

Try the following settings:
# Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.
# Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your router's main/ basic setup page).
# Then Click on wireless Tab select Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, and 11.
#Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 75
~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304
Hope this will help you.

  • Download speed degraded by the IPS

Running 4345 with 7.3(2)E4 latest code.
We have a 50mb circuit and get only 20 mb down ever since the IPS have been installed.
When we activate the software bypass, the speed test results increase right away to almost 50 mb.
Also, interfaces have been checked for errors, duplex mismatches etc, and we tested the line speeds by plugging directly to the ISP equipment.
So we know it's the inspection on the IPS.
Also there are no signatures being triggered by the IPS during the speed tests.
    Any thoughts on the issue.

  • Resetting my modem has killed my download speed bu...

Hi there, can anyone suggest a reason and hopefully a cure for this?
After teething problems with my connection initially (sorted by 2 engineer visits), I'd been getting "reasonable" 4-5mbps download speeds over the last 3 months. Gradually download speeds degraded to under 2mbps and and I felt obliged and intrigued to see if a modem reset would improve matters.
The first reset led to a lot of dropped connections, but since a second reset, the connection seems to be consistent, but only a 0.48mbps download speed!!
I've been getting a consistent circa 0.9mbps upload speed during the last three months, which is ok and this seems unaffected by the resets. I'm getting the stats from Speedtest.net.
So my question is will the modem find its download speed in time or do I have a noisy line (sorry no phone to check) or is it something else. I'm also a bit unclear why these BT modems are so flakey when it comes to resetting them.
    Thanks in advance

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal  this test would help establish any line problems and a cheap corded phone would be beneficial  - about £5 from argos
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Very slow download speeds with new laptop with windows seven- WRT160N Router

Just bought a new Laptop with windows 7 and  of course wireless.  Download speeds are horrible (0.2 mbs)  and upload speeds are normal for me ( 8mbs) Have a wrt160N  Wire less router.   Older laptop  and desktop work fine  with normal( around (8mbs) downloads and uploads.
    How do I fix this?

Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • Apple Extreme AC 6th Gen - Wifi slow download speed

My Apple Extreme AC seems to be behaving strangely and wanted to find if anyone else having the same problem, or if anyone know how to fix this.
The router is set to bridge mode and get it's connection from:
FTTH Modem (300Mbps connection) > DLink 865L (primary router) ==fast ethernet== Linksys switch > Apple Extreme AC (WAN port), the Linksys is Gigabit switch.
If I run speedtest using JPERF or WAN (speedtest.net) with a wired connection to my laptop, I get symmetrical download & upload speed of 100Mbps (benchmark).
Doing the same test on WIFI N 5Ghz, laptop is equipped with Intel Centrino 6300 AGN (450Mbps nic), I get a maximum of 45Mbps (download) and 95Mbps (upload). The upload is definitely okay, but what could cause the 50% drop in download speed? Even testing with JPERF i get similar result, except upload went even higher to about 120Mbps.
iPhone 5S connected to AE AC doing speedtest.net also yield similar result, 45Mbps (download), 80Mbps upload.
Doing the similar test (same laptop and same iPhone) with the DLINK 865L (main router) wifi 5Ghz as well, I can get:
Laptop: 150Mbps (download & upload), it varies a bit but not much
    iPhone 5S: 65~80 Mbps download, 80Mbps upload.
Is my AE AC faulty? Can I get Apple to "repair" it although I don't really know what is wrong with it.
I've tried manual radio selection & auto, nothing improves it, only degrade it further
On 2.4Ghz channel, i get half of what i get on 5Ghz, i.e. 20Mbps download, up to 40 Mbps upload

  • Download speeds suddenly dropped

Over the past year and a half i havent had any problems with my service up until 2 days ago. Our download speeds went from 350KB to 28kb - 50kb... (we have the 3Mbps plan) the modem is set to bridge and connected to a linksys router. I've tried power cycling the modem and router without any luck. I've also tried resetting the modem back to the default settings and plugging the modem directly to 3 different pcs with the same results
    Modem: Westell 6100F

#1 Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
#2  Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
    Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
#3 If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.

  • Suddenly reduced BB download speed - again!

Many months ago, I suffered a drastic reduction in BB speed.  Please can you help?  According to BT website, I should get BB download speed of 12.0 to 14.5 Mb/s but since September this has been around 9 Mb/s.  On 19 December 2012, the speed suddenly dropped to 6655/828 and here is my current data from the Hub 2.0:

As you can see, the noise ratio which is usually in the 14-15 dB area has jumped to over 20 dB!
Please don't tell me that this is due to the Hub being reset too often.  Only time I switched off the Hub was to move it to the BT box in the hallway.  It resets itself frequently enough with no help from me.  Today it has reset itself three times in 8 minutes during the past hour!!
I have moved my Hub from upstairs at the end of a 15-metre extension to the BT box in our hallway where it enters the house.  No improvement whatever.  I have an I-Plate fitted.
I connected my laptop to the Hub by ethernet and got the results:
Max possible speed 7.15Mb/s; actual speed 5.87 Mb/s download.  Sorry I can't show the image but the desktop I am using is connected by wireless and the BT Speedtester doesn't want me to connect wirelessly - why not?
Can someone please reset the noise margin to something like the 6.0 dB that is the BT standard as that will undoubtedly speed up my connection?  And should I just dump the Hub 2.0 and buy a router which delivers?  And when will this lonely bit of Birmingham be getting Infinity?  Every other exchange around me has Infinity buty good old Acocks Green still operates steam-powered Broadband!!
    Help, please!

  • Low internet download speed when on battery (have tried previously given fix)

There is a drastic fall in internet download speeds when laptop is running on battery power. As soon as I plug it in, the internet speeds return to normal.I have already changed the wireless settings to high performance in the power management profile. How do I solve this problem?Any help is appreciated. Also, my laptop is only a couple days old.

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I have looked into the issue you are having with Battery Performance and I found a couple of documents for you to try.  The first document I found is called HP Notebook PCs - Managing Power Options (Windows 8). In this document it shows you how to create your own Power Plan.  The second document I found is called HP Notebook PCs - Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 8). You can test and calibrate the battery to make sure that it is not an issue with the battery itself.  Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post and let me know how everything went. Thank you! Have a great day!

  • Download speed drop

The issue i have been having is that after a day or so my download speeds for my internet are crap. I get 10mb download speeds and when i check it after a day or so its only around 2.5mb. At first i thought it was just my internet but then i started rebooting the router and checked my speeds after i rebooted the router and bam it was back up to 10mb download speed. So i thought maybe it was just a flook so the next time it happened. I tested the speeds just before i rebooted the router and it was running about 2.5mb download speed and right after i rebooted the router it went back up to 10mb download speed.
Is there a setting i am missing in the router that i need to check off or somthing?
    I have a linksys  Wireless -N broadband Router WRT160N

Did you enable "logging" in the router?  If so, turn it off and see if that corrects your problem.
Are you running P2P (peer-to-peer) software?  If so, this is a known cause for router slow downs and disconnections.   Stop the P2P and reboot router.  It may take up to a week for the router to completely clear all the P2P junk out of its memory, and return to normal.
If the above is not your problem, then
    1)  Please state your ISP
    2)  Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT160N).
    3)  Please do the following test:
Power down your entire network.  Using an ethernet cable, connect your modem directly to your computer.  (Do not use the WRT160N for this test.)  Power up the modem and computer.  Verify that you have a working Internet connection, then proceed with the following:  (Even if your Internet connection does not work, state this, and proceed.)
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   Copy all the results to your next post.  To do the copy, highlight the results, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) keys and the paste (Ctrl-v) keys.  If your "IP address" does not start with 192.168 , then for security reasons, erase the last half of your IP address.
    Kudos! Thanks!

  • Download speed lower than Dial Up

I am stumped. I am getting download speeds of 40 kbs or less from a plan that is 3355/751. Im no dummy I should average somewhere in the high 270's to 300kbs. It takes me 20 minutes to watch a 5 minute video with all the buffering. If I upload something, I am averaging 80kbs which I can live with. I only upload a video or 2.
I phoned support and they told me my modem was going bad and should get another one, then try that. Did that, no change. Call support and they said everything is in order on their end. They have no issues with my line and everything is reading fine with all line tests. There is only 1 phone line in the whole house. DSL is on it since we have to telephone number just a dedicated dsl line.
I am using a Actiontec Modem Router Combination. I am hoping to resolve this issue soon I am tired of going through a dead end support team that walks me through the same steps every time.
    Thanks

I assume you get the 3355/751 from the transceiver statistics. If that is correct, the problem isn't in your link between the Modem/Router and Verizon. That leaves the router itself, and your PC.
Check the security settings on the router to make sure you aren't doing anything there that slows you down> In addition software firewalls on your PC, and Anti-Virus software can seriously degrade network performance.
You might also want to run the speedtest/connection analyses from Argonne National Labs, which will tell you what your connection is capable of, and where the delays are.

  • Hub 4 download speed problem

    Ongoing for several weeks.
Appear to have steady speed to hub from exchange - approx 4Mb down. Profile is 4Mb.
Using laptop over 2m ethernet cable. Speed from hub to laptop approx 3.5Mb which is reasonable.
At various time during day speed from hub to laptop drops drastically to approx 0.8 or lower. When speed exchange to hub checked it is still 4Mb - that is if speed test still works.
When checking, all wireless devices are switched off e.g. TV / 'phone / iPad etc.
New hub recieved and installed today. No change.
Anybody seen / heard of anything like this ?

  • I've extended my Time Capsule wifi via Airport Express and the download speed is still super slow

I get an average of 80Mbps download speed when close to the Time Capsule. When I got upstairs in the house the download speed drastically drops. So I decided to extend the wifi range using an Airport Express. See image below. I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?

I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?
Well, the first rule that you need to remember is that when you "extend" using wireless.....you will have a drop in the potential speed on the network. So, while you might have more "range" for the network, the network speed will drop. Nothing that you can really do about that other than connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection. There will be no speed loss over the Ethernet cable, so the Express should deliver approximately the same speed as the Time Capsule.
The next rule is that when a device "extends" using wireless, it can only extend the quality and speed of the signal that it receives. A speed "boost" will not appear.
Try locating the Express about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage.  Anything that you can do to minimize obstructions between the Time Capsule and Express and on to the other area will help.....but you will never get close to the performance of connecting the AirPorts using an wired Ethernet cable.
Unfortunately, Apple really doesn't tell you very clearly, if at all,  about important things like the two rules above.

Upload speed is OK in all the four cases.
    I've tested my uTorrent application.
    It works well. Its download speed is 1.4 MB/s = 11.2 Megabits/sec
Something between my browsers (FF3.5.7 or IE8) and NOD32
    or something with the router?
    JDownloader application
If I watch it in full view
    download speed drops to
    600 KB/s = 4.8 Megabits/sec
If I put down JDownloader to the system tray
    download speed jumps to
    1.8 MB/s = 14.4 Megabits/sec
If I use my other PC with Core2Duo CPU and with Windows 7,
everything works well. Download speed is 15 Megabits/sec.

Downloaded much and now can not see how to fix it?

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.
